£30-35k budget EV6 vs ioniq 5 vs ?

So we’ve a couple of kids on the way and a two door Golf GTI is no longer going to cut it. We’re looking for an EV, probably an SUV, looking for range of 300 miles+, with a £30-35k budget.

I’ve been drawn to a 2021 EV6 or ioniq 5, but wanted to see if anyone else had anything else I should be thinking about.

Bias here, I would suggest the Jaguar iPace, slightly older tech, and you may struggle with that range, but great fun to drive though.

Also, It certainly does a great job of ferrying a 4 year old and a 1 year old, and various prams.

Ioniq 5 sounds like a great idea.

I also understand that early Tesla Model S's still come with free supercharging which might be worthy of consideration depending on your usage.

They also come with the risk that if a single module in the battery fails you're fully on your own with limited repair options. Far more sensible to get a Kia/Hyundai/Skoda with 7 years drivetrain warranty.

I would go Polestar 2 Long Range for your budget.

Great looking car, useful frunk and decent boot will mean enough room for all your stuff.

Get a compact double buggy and you're sorted.

You can extend the warranty beyond the 3 years and the battery has a 10 year/100k miles separate warranty.

Not many EV6s within your budget and the IONIQ5's range isn't as good as the Polestar 2.

However the IONIQ5 has a faster charge rate which will be useful if charging on the road.
It also has a 5 year unlimited mileage warranty but only 8 year (or 100k miles) battery warranty.

Hmmm, not so clear cut. Try them both and see which one you prefer with regards to how it drives, interior quality, space etc..

Your 300+ mile range requirement is going to seriously limit options OP. Any particular reason you need to be able to drive for 5+ hours without stopping for a quick charge, or is it just an arbitrary number you've chosen?

My ionic 5 has a 230 mile range, but its more like 180-190, perhaps as little as 150 if on Motorway.

However it charges at 225Kw in about 10-12 minutes at the high speed Ionity banks which is literally a comfort break and a coffee.

I'd say your 300+ miles range requirement is optimistic & will only really happen on the best summer days, also if you have little ones on the way you're going to need to stop anyway.

With your budget you'll get a new 2023 Megane E-Tech Launch Edition/Equiibre for your budget & they come with a 5 year warranty too, which is around the same as what you'll have with the EV6/Ioniq.

You’re absolutely right, I’m working on the basis that 300 miles stated is probably more like 200-225 in the real world, which is just about what works comfortably for us.

Really appreciate the added suggestions, quite surprised the Polestar 2 is in budget (although noted on storage limitations) and will check out the Megane.

Make sure you actually look at a Polestar before expecting a storage limitation. My kids are beyond the pram stage now but I can fit more in the boot on a shopping trip compared to my wife's Qashqai which is one of the most common family cars on the road.

I can easily manage 8-10 supermarket bags for life not including the front boot or the underfloor space which although awkwardly shaped, is useful for softer items like clothes or blankets. My only concern would be if you are tall, it could be difficult to fit some of the bigger infant or rear facing seats behind you.
