Buying a potentially clocked car

Hi all, looking at buying my first cheapo running project car to piss around with and get about in.
Its a mr2 & it has mileage issues, from the mot history there is 2 occasions where it has droppes mileage (1700 & 4500 miles less)
The seller has explained the recent one was a input error but has come up with no explanation from the 4k one which was in 2009.
How big of a worry is this? I dont look to sell the car on in the future i would probably run it to the ground. Is there any other explanations other than clocking?

Cars normally get clocked within the first 3 years before first MOT, sometimes by the fleet manager trying to dodge mileage surcharges - or even main dealer. (true)
Buying something that age it is condition and history matters most.
Not all accident damage is recorded and it takes a good eye to spot it sometimes.
Better spend weeks seeing several cars than weeks on your back on the garage floor with the first one you found.

A potential issue with buying this one is if you intend to sell it in the future. If it's a valuable MR2 which you may later wish to exit from (to buy another car) you will have to think of how this could be viewed by a potential buyer if you wanted to sell it in the future. If you can get some kind of reasonable explanation for the earlier discrepancy you'd be okay as both would be explainable.
Sometimes cars have to have speedo changes if the old one breaks and that can cause a discrepancy.
