I'm buying a car from the executor of an estate. Old lady who was a friend and neighbor of my in-laws died. Her nephew, who lives several hours away, is executor of her estate, part of which is an old Toyota.

Is there anything i need to look out for, or is it just like any other car purchase? Is there any issue with transferring the V5 if it is in her name, as obviously she can't sign it.

As I found out last year on the day the owner dies the tax isurance etc. all cease and the executor should arrange to get a tax refund, buy new tax or SORN and get new insurance. They should have a new V5 but I'm not sure many ealise this. Make sure you are happy they have the right to sell it, Probate is ideal , not willed to anyone else? If all OK , use old V5 and do online.

I know the car hasn't moved in about six months, as she stopped driving it and it is currently sat on her driveway with a flat tyre and a dead battery. It MOT until september, and showing as still taxed so i guess the nephew hasn't cashed that in as yet. No idea on probate, but I suspect that might be a while as there is a backlog of about 16 weeks.
