maximum waft - 5-10k

So I've been in the states for a while and when I came back it just dawned on me: I need to waft. Driving over there is just so easy and relaxing. I like it.

Granted I'd been on an overnight to Heathrow and I'd had little sleep, but within 6 seconds on joining the abysmal crawl on the M4 (then the M25, then M1!) I knew I didn't need a manual gearbox in my life anymore. After that, I was being irritated by that feeling of bobbling around all the time. I don't know if this is something the car can solve or whether it's just our roads, but this constant feeling of bobbing up and down and the car fidgeting about on the surface: I can't be doing with it anymore.

I want maximum boat. Maximum American. I need some food for thought please!

Diesel or petrol, but it's going to have to have more than 4 cylinders (for the smoothness) and a proper torque converter automatic. Those searches are easy enough to do, but the key one will be ride quality. I have a feeling a lot of cars, particularly German and Japanese, will probably have suspension that is too firm for genuine wafting on our roads. Maybe a 5-cyl Volvo might tick the boxes?

Porsche Cayenne. For maximum waft go for air suspension too.

Yes it’s a sports suv but you’ll be surprised how comfy they are. And still fun too when you want it

This. Mine is a lovely old magic carpet. Hides the speed so well that I wondered if it was broken the first time I floored it off a roundabout... Nope, just quietness and linear acceleration. It is surprising just how uneventful 385bhp can feel.

Alternatively a V8 S-class (I would be wary of a V12 sub £10k!).

Shoulda said I'd probably need another set of doors. But I suppose E or S class would be equivalent.

Would be just fine with a 6 cylinder to be honest. Presumably they did 320 or 350 versions of the S?

Do you know if the Lexus GS is in a similar vein? My parents had an IS but whilst that was a lovely, hushed car, it was far too stiff. GS would have a nice creamy I6.

You'll want an S class. A significant step up in luxury compared to an E class and cheaper than CL class.

Nothing other than possibly a Rolls can out-waft a Jaguar XJ. Wide choice of engines, and regardless of which year you buy a lovely place to sit. It also has the bonus of not being yet another unimaginative German car, with black on black everywhere.
