Things are looking more than a bit slow.
Even Porsche have got a stack of 992 Turbo S sat unsold which was unheard of a few months back.
A new M2 on collecting cars didn’t sell for its max bid of £60k.
I’m thinking it’s a crazy time to buy right now. Would others agree?

Do you have a link please?
I traded an 8 year old X5 recently with 72,000, scuffs, scratches and vibrations. They slapped it on the market the next day with 25% mark up and there it’s sat for the last month. Fair enough if they spent a few quid tidying it up and I guess they might after sale but I’m not confident.

Not really. If you are prepared to valet your car simply to an adequate standard, you will get a little more for it when traded in for something seemingly a bit overpriced at a dealership. As with houses, all that really matters is the cost to change. I think the lockdown and shortages were genuine; now we have an element of excuses and greed coming in. Prices do not seem to be softening much.. someone else on here mentioned buying a temporary ‘cheapie’ as we await market trends and if something simple and mainstream is found, I doubt if you would lose much on that. I have noticed ( presumably from those who ‘ must have’ a brand new car) an increase in sightings of MGs, Dacias and even one of those generic Chinese 4x4s that a bit like a Porsche SUV if you squint.Of course, even allowing for the hype in the Daily Mail and Express, the cost of used electric cars is falling proportionally more.Even Porsche have got a stack of 992 Turbo S sat unsold which was unheard of a few months back.

I was looking at a used 2019 Jag XF and was initially listed by a private seller for £23,500 which was quite high. The price then dropped to £21,500 and I would have bitten at £20k but was rejected.
The ad left autotrader and has now been listed by a car dealer. They haven't bought the car from the private seller but are simply selling it for the owner on their behalf (for a commission). The car is now SORN too so will need taxed (luxury car tax applies).
The asking price? £24,500

Just look on the main Porsche websiteDo you have a link please?
There are 35 Turbos listed on the Porsche website as "new" and the ones I clicked on are listed as 0 miles and VAT qualifying
Thats coupe and cabrio versions BTW
They also conveniently have direct links to the configurator where they are listed both above and below list price
I thought the 911 Turbo had a chunky waiting list - new cars being sold as such at a discount is most unexpected............
Cheers

I am currently looking for a family car but I am resisting the temptation of pulling the trigger till the end of the year.
What surprises me more is the private (day dreamers) sellers who price their cars unreasonably (sometimes even higher than dealers’ prices).
Yes, I'm exactly the same. Extending the evaluation process, trying out this and that car. I'm in no rush, have joined Zipcar and have public transport galore in London. Nearly new aren't fetching near list anymore. Like automatic Volvo XC40's under 30k miles went from about 30k to 25k in a matter of months as new supply came back. Starting to see good lease deals come back slowly in the cheap leases thread. Some Audi A4 Avants, Peugeot 3008 that aren't outrageous. Not ridiculous bargains like pre COVID however, at least not yet.
I'm hoping it's going to rapidly improve in the coming months. Might even wait until Spring 2024, see how it goes.

Would like to upgrade one of my cars. Can afford to do it but going to wait. Prices seem too high plus winter soon and given so much of 'economics' is subjective i'll choose to keep what I have and money in the bank for a while. I suspect lots will feel that way. A keenly priced, well presented car from a motivated seller will likely still sell (and more so if the seller is a dealer given the greater finance options and peace of mind) but many will stick I feel.
Some sellers will 'chase down' the market, dropping prices over time but by not enough each time to secure a sale.
A 'keen' price will I think need to be 'keener' than some might imagine, again especially as a private sale. Buyers are being more cautious about what they spend their money on than they were so a car will need to increasingly stand out (price, rarity, mileage, spec etc) to find a buyer.
Everyone's position is different though and lots of money still sloshing around. Some peeps have an immediate need for a certain car within a certain price range and if one comes up locally the price perhaps doesn't need to be so keen. It keeps things interesting. On the 'other' thread I reckon both camps are correct in their anecdotes. The short term general direction seems clear and I doubt many will now say otherwise but good cars will still and will always sell well.

In fairness to the O.P. there may be other threads but in the absence of a straightforward index, they can be a faff to locate. The ‘ask a question’ section can throw up some vague and irrelevant stuff. Obviously this area of car price discussion will run for a good while.
You don't think 13,900 posts was a giveaway two threads down the list in this Car Buying folder when the OP posted?https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...
