Which white goods transportation device?

So, the time has come... the in laws need a new car because the old one has fallen apart due to not being serviced at all in the past 10 years, and naturally, as i 'like cars' i'm expected to know about such things. however, i don't know anything about the myriad of options available for what they consider a car - i try and look but then the boredom of looking at small economical cars sets in, and i glaze over....

anyways... as they are totally disinterested, all makes and models to be considered - they currently drive a chevrolet matiz. which is horrid.

so, onto criteria...

Budget - £5000

small (well, actually, narrow and easy to park are the real requirements)
cheap to tax
cheap to run
mostly used for pottering around town, most journeys less than 10 miles. so... i'm thinking, a 1.0 or 1.2, non turbo, petrol engine.
4 doors, 4 seats

and then the slightly more diificult requirements...
automatic - FIL has no interest in changing gear himself
cruise control - FIL has no interest in really doing anything, actually...
a slightly more upright driving position, maybe.

initial thoughts are typical old person fare, so a nissan micra or a honda jazz - so they can drive everywhere at 12mph below the speed limit and get in everyones way.

but in seriousness... nissan note? hyundai i10? i20? renault captur? good old ford fiesta? toyota yaris? etc etc etc.

so, if you had £5k would would you suggest they buy? their current favourite is a nissan Juke, but i'm pretty sure that wouldn't even be in my top ten.

if you've managed to make it this far without falling asleep through boredom, any suggestions gratefully received!

To be honest if they like the Juke then I wouldn't bother wasting any more time. Whatever you suggest, if it goes wrong it'll be your fault, so at least if they go with their choice/what they like it will be slightly less ammunition they can fire back at you

(At least that's my experiences with my SiL)

If not then maybe a Skoda Citigo? Here's a nice one in OAP green...

I believe Juke is OK other than poor boot space due to shape. Possibly a bit over budget

Kia/Hyundai Venga/IX20 might be worth a look. Small MPVs. Pretty sure they use TC auto

Sound like the ideal candidates for a 5k Nissan Leaf. Enough range to do their pottering around town but maybe not enough to visit you quite so frequently??

I'd say this is an easy one, it's the Astra in either Elite spec, they have conventional boxes (do not buy any that say easytronic as they're an automated manual that are to be avoided) a pretty unburstable 1.6 N/A engine:

That's incorrect. Yariseses from 2012 onwards use a CVT gearbox, the MMT was only available in the MK2 Yaris.

I assumed he didn't mention the MK3 Yaris (Mid 2011 onwards) because you wont get one for £5K.
It'll be £6K upwards. They really hold their money!

thanks for all the suggestions! will put forward a nissan note and various Kias/hyundais.

though a citigo and its equivalents looks good too.

Nissan leaf is an interesting one... their parking space is right by their ground floor flat, so theoretically they could make it work with an extension lead out the window.

I looked into it when the doctors were trying to talk mum out of a manual. The only dealbreaker for us was her leafy location being devoid of public chargers - not something I wanted her to risk during winter.
