What sort of money is he looking to spend?
About £3k, must be auto, not too low and preferably large. He's looking at C4 Picassos and 3008's but I'm trying to steer him towards an Smax.

I'd stay well clear of an Antara. Had one as a hire car when it was brand new, and the best thing I can say about it is it makes the Mokka seem like a good car.
It's a badge-engineered Chevy Captiva, and it's very agricultural and the opposite of relaxing to drive. From an XF he'd be going from one of the best riding cars of its generation to one of the worst.
If he does want the higher seating position, I'd echo the Japanese/Korean soft roaders already mentioned at that budget.
Edit to add that my neighbour was a serial Vauxhall buyer of 3 decades. The Antara was the car that caused that streak to end.
