Our Qashiqai is becoming a squeeze for my family of 5.

Is there anything out there that would be comfy on longer journeys for 5 people (2 adults, 3 growing kids) for around £5k?

I'm not fussed on age, milage or fuel or body type. But I would like reasonable running costs without having to be too concerned ever time something goes bork.

Have you considered something like a Mondeo Estate or an Insignia Estate? Even if they're not rock solid reliable like a Honda, they're spacious and economical to repair.

Good suggestions thanks.

I've not much experience with estates, will there be more room for passengers than a bigger mpv?

I know it's not a popular choice but an MPV would be the best option for space as you get three proper seats across the back.

Vauxhall Zafira is the obvious one

Could look at options from Citroen and the Korean brans too such as Kia and Hyundai

Bigger Estates tend to have better leg room than MPV’s. MPV would be more like sitting in a van.

An Elgrand would be amazing, but I'd be a bit worried about availability of parts and ease of repairs if something went wrong.

Perhaps a VW touran would fit bill then, 7 individual seats.
Plenty of part availability

In fairness the Touran/Alhambra/Galaxy mpv was reasonable. The 1.9TDi was fairly robust and although the floor plan was based on the Mondeo Estate, they were fairly spacious. The only down side was that the boot space was taken up by the 6th and 7th seat (which were at least removable, but this meant storing when removed)

Isn't the touran a 5+2 whilst the sharan is a 7 seater

Ok great, thanks guys.

I don't need a 7 seater, our Qashiqai is a 7 seater and we rarely ever use the additional seats.

Superb is better than an E class for rear leg room, they verge on limo amounts of rear space.

I like the idea of the superb, I always had a soft sport for them.

Not very PH but Renault Grand Scenics are quite good and have lots of space.

That V10 TDI Phaeton would be ideal.
(happily glossing over the borkage possibilities!)

With cars like the Galaxy/S max it's not the number of seats but actual space that'll be the reason people are suggesting MPV's.
