Purchasing a car in England, destined for NI - travelling to

Good morning,

I apologise if this has been answered before, I can't find anything relating to my specific question.

I am living in Northern Ireland and want to purchase a car in England. My best route home is to Holyhead - Dublin and drive to NI.

Are there any issues with customs in Dublin? The car is destined for NI as my personal vehicle and is therefore exempt from any fees if I were to travel from say Birkenhead or Cairnryan.

Why would Irish customs care? As long as the car is all legal and insured.

There will be no issue, in the same way as a UK car crossing to France for a holiday has no issue. You’re just driving your (presumably registered and insured) UK car through Ireland.

I bought my car in England and came back on sea truck Heysham to Dublin and just drive off and away no checks whatsoever.

Why not use the Birkenhead to Belfast ferry?

There won't be any issues driving from Dublin.

Thanks for all the replies, I thought it would be ok I just remember hearing somewhere things had changed because of Brexit, obviously I was wrong.

Unfortunately Birkenhead to Belfast is overnight which doesn't suit my timings.

The overnight ferry is great, usually cheaper than Holyhead-Dublin too

Brand new super-ferries and a cabin is only £60

Sleep the way over and wake up fresh in the morning, I use it frequently
