Merc, BMW, Volvo with some miles

New car time.
Budget £12k
I need to use finance which makes the car no less than 2015.
I'm liking the Merc C class estate, the 2015/6 model but also the 3 series and V60. Mileage on the cars I can get is around the 100k mark
Engine is likely to be diesel and the 2l variant of all three.
My question is miles.
I've read before that BMW diesels may need extensive work after 100k.
Is there wisdom to be shared around these cares at this kind of mileage?
I tend to keep cars for a couple of years and this car will be a hack. Dog, cricket bags etc.
I's like to mitigate and understand the potential for a large bill, however I fully understand that is always the risk.
We've just sold our Skoda Superb. Not great on the motorway and too noisy and not refined enough in the cabin. We don't need a huge estate.
The outside option is a medium hatchback, 1 series etc.

Not entirely related to your question, but I bought a 2015 Volvo V40 (R Design Lux) about 6 months ago on 85k. Just ticked over 90k last week and you really wouldn't know it - interior is in fantastic condition and the seats still have that magic Volvo comfort for long motorway trips. I'd been in an S60 taxi and thought how nice it was which is what made me start looking at them - photos don't really do it justice I found.
Not even a hint of reliability issues either (away to strap some wood to my chest...). Around the 2015/16 mark Volvo changed from Ford engines to making their own so I deliberately looked for a Volvo-engined one. All Volvo engines are 2.0l.
Wears it's miles very well.

2018 v60 diesel here.
Just over 70k miles with no issues. Spacious, comfortable, high 50/ low 60mpg easily achievable, excellent boot size without feeling like a big car.
Just a bit dull to drive
Will be changing in Jan as it is a company car and it needs to go back. Struggling to find something with a more interesting drive, same space and on similar budget.

As with any used car how well it's been maintained in the past will help with it's reliability in the future.Budget £12k

I'd suggest taking a good look at the 308 GT estate they're a good car & you'll get one with a fair bit less than 100k on the clock:

Some people have reported NOx sensor issues with Merc diesels of that era

I don't know really how common it is, but much as I like Mercs, you might want to go slightly older to dodge these issues.

You will get more for your money with a Passat, Mondeo etc
This is a really easy one. C220 CDI every time. I was in Bergerac in the summer and needed to get from the hotel into town (about 8 miles) and then back later after dinner.
The taxi on the way in was a newish DS7 that wasn’t really my thing and reminded me of an over upholstered Ford Granada Scorpio from the early 90’s.
On the way back I was in a circa 2017 high mileage Mercedes C220CDI SE Estate. What a lovely thing it was with a supple ride, nice and quiet together with still feeling quite premium. I would definitely consider one.

Ran an F11 BMW 5 series to just over 200K miles . Original chain (issue is on the pre 2012 cars) not even a rattle. Only issues were DMF as a manual and it got through a set of airbags for rear suspension. Just bought a 2018 G31 on 90k miles, I think high mileage is a good idea provided they have been looked after.
So our purchase took a turn today.
We chose a different V40 from the same dealer (see below).
It had an AA check and I did a Vcheck as well.
Everything green and rosy HOWEVER......When I got there half the car had been badly painted and there were shoddy repairs to the front bumper.
It is a damaged and repaired car.
I rejected it immediately and the finance has been cancelled.
Has anyone else had the same/similar experience?
The last car we bought was remotely and from a used dealer in Blackburn. Car was amazing and the service the same.

I’ve bought lots of cars remotely, although they have always been ex demo BMW’s and under a year old with the exception of an Alfa Mito that was 3 years old at an Alfa dealer. Never had a problem. We chose a different V40 from the same dealer (see below).
