The FFRR has gone and I'm looking for a 4x4 do it all that'll lug stuff around, munch some miles and tow our caravan. I did narrow it down to a Merc ML350 then a 2011 X5 40d has shown up.

The spec is pretty good and it's also cheaper for the yearly tax at £365, where as the ML is £675. The X5 is up for £8k and done 120k miles with full history, albeit not BM. The ML is £7.5k with slightly less miles.

Anything to look out for on the X5's?

My uncle had one of these for towing his caravan, hee got rid of it for a Santa Fe randomly as it went through tyres for fun, they wernt cheap either.

It was very quick for what it was, he's now got a GLE which he really likes.

X5 40d E70

Huge, spacious, good handling and powerful.

Harsh ride, tramlining. Front propshaft break and make a hole in the sump. Thermostat issues. Rear air suspension issues (this one is cheap to sort out at least). Not very economical for a diesel. c.27 mpg.

Thanks all. The X5 is now no longer for sale - unsure why and that's all the seller stated.

To live with, probably a massive pain as it’s 13 year old and covered a lot of miles. I’d only go near one if there was a meticulous history with it.

Cheers guys. I was sadly kind of getting that impression. Is it a BMW generation thing?

I tried an X3 3.0d M Sport, which seemed so much smaller. I didn't really feel the love for it. Nice enough and clean car apart from the sat nav not working. I've been a Merc man for a while and did enjoy some of the cars from them but stuff from certain years just seems to have nose dived in terms of everything.

I have a 2016 40d and it's used for all sorts of family duties. Longest serving car we've every had and apart from usual wear and tear/maintenance it's been brilliant. Approaching 100k miles now. Goes well, handles well for size, plenty of space, comfortable.

Prefer it to all the usual suspects.

I have one. 12 plate. Have taken it from 20000 miles to 100000 miles over 9 years. Heavy on consumables (brakes, tyres, etc.) but otherwise perfectly reliable. I budget £1k pa for maintenance, another £500 for insurance and road tax.

The only change I made was to switch from 20s to 18s. Vastly improves the ride and makes tyres a lot cheaper too.

I could afford something newer, and I sometimes ponder it, but I never actually do it. It’s worth less than 10K trade and is about 95% as good as a 70-80K brand new one.
