EV or cabrio - £15-£18k
Discussion
Mrs SB starts a new job in January with a commute of 55 miles return, mostly along rural and A roads. We had hoped to get away with keeping one ‘everyday’ car but they’ve asked her to do an extra day so that won’t work and now we need an extra car.
Being the snob that she is, a snotter won’t cut the mustard. She’s thankfully realised that lease costs are too much (she’s done well from cheap deals over last decade) so we are looking at buying. Budget £15-18k.
On one hand I’m thinking EV, as we can charge at home and she can at work, either used 20/21 plate BMW i3 or Mini Cooper E.
EV also appeals as a weekend/ school runabout.
Alternatively she still harks back to an Audi A4 convertible we used to have so I’m also thinking of Audi A5 cabrio or BMW 2 series (the 4s seem too old for the budget).
So not too old, 4 seats and relatively economical.
Any other suggestions or recommendations?

Corsa e Elite Nav, it's the same car as the 208e:

I'd say the A3/A5 in either 1.5T or 2.0T form

As someone with an EV (Model 3 Performance) and a 4-seat convertible (440i), this all comes down to the type of commute and the aim for running costs.
The EV is undoubtedly the cheaper to run, and the most relaxing commute, but the convertible makes every roof-down trip more special, at the cost of… cost.
I don’t think there’s a right or wrong answer, and for an easy life I’d let the missus choose.

Blow the budget and get a convertible electric Mini!! Both boxes ticked.
You can buy a lot of fuel with the money saved by buying the petrol Mini convertible, and you’ll enjoy the journey a lt more than in a hardtop. biggbn said:

When I saw it announced a few months ago I thought it would be perfect, other than the price. Will be interesting to see where values of the new model end up in years to come.Unfortunately I think the cabrio would be too small in the back as our boys are growing fast.
