I'm sniffing around for something to tick these boxes, and I'm going in circles between estates, 4x4s, and vans - any ideas?

Budget £7,500ish.

Must have...
  • Massive boot capable of holding three 75kg dogs
  • Comfortable interior
  • The ability to sit unused for months at a time
Would prefer...
  • Automatic gearbox
  • Leather seats
  • Something that isn’t painfully ugly
Don't care about...
  • MPG
  • ULEZ
  • Resale value

As there is no budget given its going to be a guessing game as to what is suitable, but…

The most comfortable seats I’ve ever had in a car were those in a Volvo. You seem to like both 4x4 and estate, so what about an XC70?

Depending on age and spec they are available between shed budget and £25k give or take. Comfortable, cavernous boot (even moreso with the seats down), and should be able to handle any abuse.

Sounds like that you are after a ‘Dog car”... how about a Kangoo.

Old Rangie was where my thoughts went initially, but leaving one a month or two between using it is a recipe for disaster I think.

If you’re able to put it on a trickle charger it’ll be fine. If not, maybe a Landcruiser? Though I’d have thought that anything big in the sub-£10k bracket brings a risk of not starting after a month or two idle.

Firstly I'd avoid anything with air suspension as they don't tend to appreciate being left for weeks/months on end.

The obvious pick is an E350cdi Estate:

It fails on the looks department but for half of your budget the Subaru Tribeca is hard to beat:
