Hi,
I've narrowed it down to one of the above. Diesel auto, budget c£10k. I can get a newer lower mileage CX5 but hear horror stories about the diesel (will be going for the 175bhp variant) and general build quality/rust etc. I would get an older X3 (2.0d in SE spec) but there are some nice low mile & well maintained examples.
I don't need either for children, dogs etc it will spend most of the time on the M5 doing c200 miles a week & I like the extra height and awd is useful when the weather is grim.
I have just ditched my XC60 D5 as it was ok but just didn't like the engine/auto box and I have had a Lexus RX400h before which I loved apart from the dated interior and CVY gearbox.
Which should I go for or should I look at something else?
thanks
Mark

You could consider the successor to the RX400H, which is the RX450H. For 10k miles a year I, feel £10K on one of those instead of an ageing diesel might be a safe bet. It does have a CVT box still but if you are trundling up and down M5 would it matter. ULEZ compliant if resale is a factor.
If X3 then I would consider a 30d instead of a 20d for the much nicer and not N47 engine (yes I know N57s are not bombproof).
Ford Kuga 2.0d in top Titanium X spec could be considered and you could save a chunk of your budget I think.
I don't know much about CX-5s sorry. I guess you could get a newer one than a beemer.
Audi Q3?
Yeti?

I'd get an X3 out of the two...making sure it has xenon headlamps as the standard halogens are like tealights.
Get one that's been serviced regularly and make sure you drop the oil every 10k going forward and it should see you well.
ZF auto box in the BMW is way better than the auto in the Mazda which is an Aisin unit which IIRC is the same as what Volvo use.
Having also driven an XC60 I agree with you, great car, let down by engine and gearbox.
Cheers,
Chris

I have a n47 engine X3 20D X drive . It's 2011 with 130'000 miles.
It's been a great car until recently. Timing chain went, cost over 2k.it's had 3 turbos in 6 months and now it's back in the garage with major engine fault and I think it's going to need a new engine, so probably a write off.

Sorry to hear that It's been a great car until recently. Timing chain went, cost over 2k.it's had 3 turbos in 6 months and now it's back in the garage with major engine fault and I think it's going to need a new engine, so probably a write off.
. Has it been regularly serviced throughout it's life?I owned a diesel CX5 for a couple of years. Albeit a manual gearbox. Nice to drive and a reasonable size. There are known issues regarding oil contamination from the DPF (Im no mechanic but google and its well documented) https://www.mazdaforum.com/forum/mazda-cx-5-54/cx5...
Mine was under warranty and as per the same as the OP of the thread I linked to Mazda sorted it. However, I lost confidence in the car and sold it.

Those Infiniti’s look like good value. A posh Nissan?
Parts easy to obtain and reasonable servicing? What is their reliability like as I’ know nothing about them.
Thanks
Mark
Yes Infiniti is Nissans version of Lexus, servicing can be carried out by most Nissan dealers or a decent Indy which is the way most of my family who have them go.Parts easy to obtain and reasonable servicing? What is their reliability like as I’ know nothing about them.

Parts are easy to obtain although we had to wait three days for an A/C pump, the engine os the same one that's used in Nissan's vans so parts are plentyful should you need them.
Also adding Carplay/Android Auto is around £700-800 fitted.
