Can’t help about the finances but I’d love hear what owners have got to say about the 340d. Looks to me a pretty perfect daily. Just wish they weren’t so expensive and you could get them in some interesting colours!

Plus hardly any got electric memory seats.

For the price these now are that’s pretty rubbish.

Depending on mileages done I’d be going with a 340i too as I think residuals offset the economy quite a bit, so you need to be doing big miles to make it pay off.

Chip then down to £35,000 and you’d own that outright with a personal loan at £720pcm for 4 years.

Given good miles/spec if you look after it it’ll be worth £15,000 in 4yrs, and so equivalent of £408pcm lost.

Given I paid £28,000 for a 5k mile 1yr old decent spec 335Xd in late 2017… these 340d seem mightily expensive if they’re £36k at 3yrs old!

I’d wait another 12 months and the correction in prices to kick in a bit more.

I went from an F31 335d to a G21 M340i; the diesel had been an excellent servant but with a lower annual mileage I really wanted to go back to a 6-pot petrol. However, good as the B58 engine was, on reflection I think a big, heavy, car like the G21 is actually better suited to the more torquey delivery of the diesel; from what I've read the latest engine in the M340d is a step forward over the one in my 335d in terms of performance, economy and refinement so I think if I was ordering again now that's where my money would go.

In a sports car I'd take the petrol every time but horses for courses and (IMHO) in a car like the 3-series I think the diesel's a better match.

I’d agree it’s a decent engine and very economical.

But for whatever reason on the F30, decent spec petrols command a decent premium.

I wouldn’t buy the diesel to have the cheaper ownership experience.

I can’t think what I’d replace my F30 335Xd with for family car duties though.
If it weren’t for the G series looking a bit flabby and those new dashboards they all have I’d have likely bought one in a few more years.

Possibly an E60 M5 with a manual conversion will be my next family car, for a laugh smile

Prices on the M340i and M340d seem to falling fairly significantly over the last few months and the number for sale increasing. I'd be tempted to wait as long as possible before buying. On AT the 2nd cheapest BMW Approved Used M340d has been reduced by £3k since 16/09/23 when it was first advertised.
