Hello.

I am looking for a car for my wife. Will be doing around 5k miles a year and have around £4000 to spend. But she wants something that looks nice but it needs to be reliable as possible

Options so far are.
Kia Seed or Giulietta.

What do you think and any year or engine type you would avoid.

Thanks

I really like Giuliettas. Although Alfas have a bad rep for reliability, these are great cars and much more reliable than their German competitors at the same price range. Budget around £500 for a timing belt replacement if you can't find one with it done recently. The only things that go wrong with them are more niggles than anything disastrously expensive. Here's a nice purple one

Kia Ceed would be alright too - keep an eye out for Hyundai i30s as they are basically the same car.

If you want reliability, then you can't go far wrong with a Honda Civic

Here's a 1.8 i-VTEC

Newer shape with slightly more miles on it - higher mileage wouldn't bother me with these, they are solid. Your wife should be able to get at least another 10 years motoring out of one of these providing it's serviced every year

Another Japanese car to consider is the Mazda 3 - here's a 1.6 Takuya

Ford Focus with the 1.6 should also be reliable, just avoid the Ecoboost engines and automatics at this price range

Pretty much the same car underneath as the Focus is the Volvo S40 and C30

S40 1.6 S

If you don't need 5 doors then how about this Volvo C30?

I had a ceed estate for a short while, was dull, boring and reliable.

So probably exactly what your looking for.

Hyundai I30 is same car underneath so consider those as well

That volvo is a nice wee car. Sensible, clean, safe. It’s no sexy Alfa, but you’ll need to compromise on something.

Citroen C1, Toyota Aygo, Peugeot 107, it's all the same thing.

My daughter has a 2009 Mazda 2. Its ultra reliable, cheap to run and can be fun to drive
