Is there a simple way of finding out what the original list price was of a car to know if it will be subject to the the additional tax charge?

I've done a Google search and it says to use the GOV tax checker site but that asks for the 11 digit reference from the V5 to be able to confirm tax rates.

Ask the RK?

They'll either know the original price or the VED rate.

You can find out via the reg number on the gov car tax check site. It's not obvious though (I has the exact same question a few months ago and someone on here had to explain it to me).

Once you enter the reg number and click through there is a table called Vehicle Details. At the bottom there will be a row saying 'Additional Rate applicable until' with a date if it is subject to the £40k extra tax. If it is not subject to the £40k extra tax that row will not be there (which is confusing, as I thought that row should always be there but simply say not applicable against it for cars less than £40l list). Try it out with a car you know that is above £40k list, and one that you know is below and you'll see how it shows it.

This site - https://cartaxcheck.co.uk/ is pretty accurate.

No affiliation, have just used it quite a lot myself.

Yes I tried loads of sites but they all wanted some sort of payment so I tried the above & it worked a treat! Go to Gov car tax section but don't start the 'tax your car' process as that insists on the 11 digit V5 or renewal letter code. There is a section called check if a car is taxed! Once you input the reg it will say taxed or untaxed & when you scroll down through the 'car details' section the last one will read - additional rate is payable until *date*. If it doesn't say that then you are below the £40k new list price! I tried this with various taxed & untaxed cars (above & below the threshold) as the one I was thinking of buying was a nearly new untaxed car & it works either way! I knew mine was extremely close but it turned out I will pay £200 rather than £640 which I wasn't expecting so was well pleased!! (O:
