HI all, just looking for some advice on insuring my teenage son who has just passed his test aged 18. I've run a couple of quotes on go compare for a cheap Fiesta and a cheap Polo and both have come in at £2500+ for the year. Is this the cost of insuring a new driver these days or am I missing something?

Thanks

There is no go to cheap insurer is the short answer,

You can look at different variables such as fitting a black box, changing the car for something less obvious such as look at a small engine Focus instead of a Fiesta for example, something that isn't a typical new driver car.

We found Direct Line at the cheaper end and easiest as no black box needed, the new driver just uses the Direct Line app on their phone and their driving is monitored that way.

Kia Picanto 1L was also at the cheaper end of cars, Fiesta, Corsa, Polo etc tended to be hundreds more.

Sterling were the best for us, when you pass they credit the cancellation fee towards a new policy. All the other companies charge a lot to cancel.

When my son needed more miles it was reasonable.

Bear in mind full licence but complete driving novice I’m not sure that’s necessarily an horrendous price given what many others are saying about Insurance prices.
All 3 of my children had Fiestas insured with Admiral and certainly the extra premium when they all passed ( we insured them as learners ) plus inflation probably isn’t a huge difference to your annual quote.
Adding yourself / partner as Named Drivers might reduce the premium as well as limiting the annual mileage perhaps.
Once that first 12 months loss free record is achieved should be reinforced as that’s when the premium should reduce.

Try and think outside of the box a bit with first cars. My daughter had a 1.6 Cooper as her first car, and that was cheaper than a 1.4). She’s now got a 170 bhp Mito QV at 22 and that was cheaper to insure than the 135. Son has a C30 1.6,as his first car again not the obvious little engined thing that most will have. I assume everything is done on algorithms and hence maybe the above aren’t likely ( touch wood) to crash as there’s less first time drivers using them? MG3’s also seem to be cheap insurance. Admiral/Tesco/ Hastings have always been competitive, and it also makes a difference how close in time you are to taking out the policy.

Thanks for all the feedback. Maybe I should check the price for my Morgan 3 wheeler 😂

I assumed that I had to go for the smallest engine possible but sounds like it’s worth trying a few other cars.
