Durable New car

We're looking to change our Volvo XC60. I've been disappointed how delicate it is.
As a rugged SUV with four-wheel drive it should be a good country tool.
The bumpers and trims are so delicate and expensive to replace I just don't want another.

Aside from anything built 10 years ago what modern cars are fit for
Parisian parking
Cornish hedges
Supermarket carparks?

Unfortunately many of the old-school bumpers went out with the advent of pedestrian impact protection. People are more costly to repair than vehicles.

the 1980s brought us the MGB rubber bumper, the volvo beams with sprund mounts and I had a Saab 900 that you could park against a wall.

Although Maybe that wasnt pedestrian protection?

Our active spec Hilux has stood up pretty well to general countryside abuse.

It has plastic bumpers but they're unpainted so don't scratch or scrape and can be cheaply replaced if you do somehow manage to break them. It regularly gets rammed through snow drifts at speed, has hit various wildlife and has twice ended up in a ditch without any major visible damage.

17 inch steel wheels with proper 70 profile tyres shrug off getting hammered up and down farm tracks and seem almost unbreakable despite no care being taken at all to avoid potholes. 80k miles and counting on the current BF Goodrich all terrains. Still think it's crazy how many 4x4s come with 20 inch alloys and rubber bands for tyres (Land Rover, I'm looking at you).

With a canopy the load bay is perfect for muddy/smelly things like dogs, firewood, children, etc that you don't want to share the cab with.

130k and 8 years on it hasn't even needed a bulb.
