Jaguar F-Pace - Am I Being Silly?

Bear with me here.

I might be shopping for a new car shortly and I want another SUV.

They're all overpriced because of our fascination with them, but these are cheaper than competitors.

I know all about the Ingenium diesel engine and their problems......but would you buy one?

Have much luck am I going to need to avoid it stting itself within 5000 miles?

I was looking at these earlier this year. I wouldn’t buy an Ingenium diesel under any circumstances. It seems to me that you’re literally playing roulette with those. See the thread in readers cars by Ecsy. I’d go petrol every time.

There is also apparently a steering issue (can’t recall, something maybe to do with the rack mounts??) so check that out too.

Best advice is not to buy one with four cylinders.

Would I buy one? Yes, a petrol 3.0 V6 or 5.0 V8. The F-Pace came out later in the life of these engines so AFAIK the timing chain issues were resolved and they're about as reliable as any other average car. Also with a 500hp V8 I'd be less unhappy if it threw a big bill, being something special.

Not an Ingenium four-pot though, not special enough to be worth the worry.

As above you're not mad BUT the 3.0 engines & above are the ones to go for.

This, and also the lower trim is more suited to a car from the class below.

A load of lads I know looked at them when new some even had 48 hour test drives, most got what (at the time was the previous gen) XC60 and a couple managed Tiguans on the same monthlies, although the Tiguan has some iffy trim too and the XC60 these days is a bit bland.

Avoid the largest wheels if you do get one, a neighbour who is a Jag man had a nightmare with vibration and they couldn’t solve it, going from ‘we see the problem’ to ‘they all do that’

As people have said, go for 3.0 v6 or above if you can, I think the interior is great as long as it isn’t base spec.

One thing though, you say 5000 miles, is that all you expect to do In it? If that is the case a diesel isn’t suited and more likely to cause issues.

2.0 Petrolis fine too. Allegedly 2.0 diesel built after 2019 have revised chains.

I’ve had 3 D200 models 1 discovery sport and 2 f paces, no issues with the engine on any of them.

Brother in law had one from new, 2018 163bhp poverty spec manual. It had the 2.0 diesel and he got rid last year at 110k I think it was on, had it serviced on time and only thing that went wrong and cost some money was an ABS sensor. He had it through COVID where it did very small runs round the village too so not ideal for a diesel.

Seems it's pot luck, he's spent much more on the S max he's only had for for 12 months with a sized calliper.

He got 11k for it, which to be honest I thought would be a good buy for someone, nice car for that money.

Adding my experience; 2 litre disco sport, bought used on 21k miles, in the 40,000 miles we’ve had it the only two things that have gone wrong are a battery and an adblue sensor.

It’s the d180 so I do want a bit more power on the next JLR product I get - if insurance ever comes back down.
