Bored of my M4 competition after 6 years of ownership

I have a sakhir orange M4 competition convertible which I've had for 6 years, now on 32k miles after doing the NC500 in the summer with a mate.

Love the looks, I love the flawless reliability, I love the gearbox, I love the exhaust which is crazy loud for a stock car, and the performance and handling is exceptional.

Doing the old military road in the Cairngorms recently reinforced the brilliant handling.

However I no longer really need a 4 seater and I fancy a change. Budget is £30k. Coupe or convertible.

Any suggestions?

I have an Eton SUV to I don't need anything remotely practical.

I went M2 comp to 997.2 to 981 Spyder. Haven’t looked back. Once I drove a Porsche never gave a M2/3/4 a second thought. If I were you I’d go Boxster. Totally different, tactile, driving experience

Slight budget creep but a 987 Spyder is a great proposition.
Rare, lightweight, seats two comfortably, enough power to wring its neck and not be doing silly speeds, and probably one of the best cars I’ve owned and regretted selling.

After a M4 Comp getting something that raises the bar won't be easy.

Do you want a more nimble sports car or a powerful blunt GT weapon?

Something like a 718 Cayman S is a great sports car and creeping into budget.

I don't find the M4 lacking and consider it very nimble, especially since I got the tracking done. I have excellent b roads around here and in the summer on dry roads I can really push and the car always performs well.

I think I need to try a few different cars. As for the boxster, hmmm not convinced, I think I would find it slow.

A 996 Turbo is going to be pretty leggy at £30k.

I suspect you're going to have to compromise on the grunt aspect, else you'll just get stuck with another super saloon, as M4s are crazy fast in a straight line given how relatively inexpensive they are.

Anything from Porsche will be on another level in terms of dynamic ability though - especially when compared to a roofless heavy car like an M4.

If you want something blunt and fast the world is your oyster. If you want something clever, tactile and brilliantly balanced get a Porsche. Raw speed gets boring. My M2 comp was fast but every time I get in my 981 I’m reminded what a brilliant drivers machine is. Sounds like you need a TVR. Absolutely rubbish by any metric, but (seems) fast.

I think I will just save up for a 991.1.

Sorry but the Cayman/Boxster is too much like an Audi TT for me. Same vibes and never a car I've looked at and thought, I want that.

I once had a 996 TT X50 - a car I’d lusted after for a long time.
What a disappointment it was - very capable but so dull and boring.

From that, I went to an Exige S240 - 200bhp less but actually just as quick as the Porsche and so much more fun and engagement.
When that got written off I bought a new 987 Spyder - also had an F80 M3 at the same time and the Spyder, whilst down on power of the M3 was so much better in every regard (apart from seating 5…)

It’s not always about chasing big bhp numbers if you really enjoy driving.

Fair enough, the want factor is important and I get that. You’re dismissing a great drivers car though in Boxster or Cayman and a significantly better steer than a TT (or BMW!).

Much cheaper than selling it in the hope of finding something that may or may not be slightly better.

If I ever had a car like this I think I would also run something rubbish to make me appreciate it even more.

I did exactly that years back when I had the 200SX/Cerbera too, and it definitely made them both feel special when I got to use them.

Although I do remember running an E61 520d as my daily when I had the Cerbera as the weekend car, and I used to question why I was driving the slow 520d everyday, when I had the Cerb just sat at home doing nothing though. So I now drive a F82 M4 as my daily in comparison.

The F8x M4 is a difficult car to replace though I think. I've had mine for almost 4 years now and I still love it, and I struggle to think about what to replace it with(with cars that I can afford anyway).
