Hi All,

I am looking to purchase a used vehicle and have came across one on Autotrader that appears a bit too good to be true. The seller is listed as a trader however the only info available has me a bit wary.

The advert lists a phone number and advises that autotrader has removed all of their reviews due to rules on small businesses. A google search leads me to a website of the trader which only sells this model of car, however there is no location information other than the city it is based in. all of the stock photos also appear to be taken on the same driveway.

To me these are red flags however I have never purchased a car before and so I am just wondering if I am overthinking it?

Sorry if this is too little information to go off, I do not want to dox the trader.

Nope, nothing on Trustpilot and I can't find anything relating to the name on companies house. The trading name is quite generic as well, along the lines of Donald Duck car sales.

Their website and advert says that it is a family run business that has been operating for a long time but I just find it strange that I can't find any reviews or supporting information.

The price of the car also does appear to be cheap for the age and milage, however I was unsure if this was just due to the time of year.

It sounds like an amateur home based seller. My guess is he’s advertising loads of cars on AT so they’ve badged him as a “Trader” but IMHO you’ll get no more protection than if you were buying in a private sale.

I bought my first car from someone like this, after chatting to him his brother owned a used car dealership and he sold anything under £2000 from his house.

It basically allowed room for the decent stock at the showroom and all the cheap part ex to be sold on his driveway, and with the limited rights as a private sale.

My car was fine and the seller seemed genuine, although this was 20 years ago I only paid the going rate on a private sale.

No harm in calling the dealer and asking for an explanation. A genuine person won’t be offended by the enquiry.

One chap I know (a PDR man) lost control of his Google reviews due to a hack and he had to start again which he was very frustrated about.

I have a mate who buys, fixes and sells a few cars, he's semi-retired really.
Legally he is a trader.
A lot in his position would pretend to be private sellers.
He has no retail premises.
He advertises cars, talks to potential buyers, agrees how and when the buyer can view the car.
Quite a lot of his buyers are traders themselves.

You're buying the car, not the trader!
I wouldn't dismiss a car because the seller is a particular sort of trader. Or a private seller.
But then, if I want something,I'm prepared to take a calculated risk on it if the price is right.

Don’t bother with it, there are hundreds more cars to choose from on Autotrader. My advice is to stick with a recognised trader, that’s been operating from the same premises for a long time, and has plenty of good reviews.

Thanks for the advice all. As I'm not too experienced in buying a car I have decided not to bother with this one. There's plenty more out there.
