Hi all,

Currently looking into buying an Audi s4 avant, not to sure on the year yet but probably 2012-2014. I was just wondering what the true running costs are like.

Thanks!

Finding one that's been well looked after is the challenge. I had mine from new for 9 years and sold it this summer.

I have a 2011 S5 Sportback with 98,000 miles on it, which should be pretty similar and it’s been reliable and enjoyable to own for me. Mine is a very late pre-facelift, which is less economical and has hydraulic rather than electric steering, as I understand it.

Fuel economy is not great around town, but it’s much better on flowing 30-60mph roads and a little worse than I’d like at motorway speeds. I spent about £1,000 getting everything that could be serviced done when I bought it, but it flew through this year’s MOT with no advisories for something like the sixth year and I trust it for ferrying around my two-year-old without incident.

One thing to bear in mind is that later 64-plate-on S4s/S5s got the ‘CREC’ engine which upped fuel economy further and are supposed to be more robust. If you can afford one of these, that’s what I’d recommend for the lowest running costs and greatest reliability…

CREC has a clutch on the supercharger to improve economy, and additional injectors to prevent the coking problem.
Of course, all this is more stuff to potentially go wrong!

Facelift cars will all have the later DSG box. Important to check that's had the required fluid changes. (every 36K miles?)

Don’t get the manual, do get the sport diff. Real world mpg around 23-25 if you drive it with any level of enthusiasm (mine is manual) brakes really need upgrading as they quickly run out of stopping power.

Love mine, had a dyno remap done, no pulleys and run just over 400 bhp.
