Tesla Delivery - Nightmare Before Christmas
Discussion
Kudos to your 80 year old mum for getting a Tesla but how common is that?
Throw in the whole "my son is handling everything for me" and devil's advocate but I can see how it might look like the kind of scam you read about where some poor old lady has been conned by family or a third party.
Not sure I can blame them for showing an abundance of caution.

Just following compliance.
It's a real red flag the situation you describe, albeit you are probably doing as I would to help a parent
As above just get her to come along for the car, albeit she is old she must be able to travel as she has a car and goes daily to the hospital and holidays too

As has been said it sounds like they’re a bit concerned and in some ways rightly so. They’ve got to be careful with the way everyone is now regarding scams and the elderly being conned out of money etc. They are rightly doing due diligence on the transaction. They’ve don’t know you both so hard to be trusting of you and if it turned out to be some sort of con they’d be in trouble.
It’s a nuisance but in a way, good of them to actually make sure all is above board.

Sounds like they are following their procedure to cover their backsides. To an outsider, it could appear to be coercive behaviour, so that is what they have to assume it may be. I too have an elderly Mother that I assist with a lot of things, and I do get some funny looks sometimes when she is paying for things with me loitering behind her. The way of the world now I guess.

My 80 year old mum placed an order for a Tesla in November and its became a nightmare trying to take delivery of the car. The original plan was that I would collect the car on her behalf which is part of Teslas normal procedure, it was arranged via customer support and the collection date was booked.
Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago when they were doing the visual ID check via zoom with my mum, firstly they never sent a link at the arranged time and secondly, they were 45 mins late with no call until we messaged them.
The sales person asked my mum to email in her licence and she said “I'll have my son do it”, this seemed to trigger some kind of strange behaviour. She then got this email
“I am writing to follow up regarding your ongoing application for a vehicle with Tesla Financial Services Limited,. During our recent interactions, we observed that your son has been actively assisting you throughout the process, including answering calls, sending messages, and assisting during video call. While we appreciate his involvement and support, we are required to ensure that key steps such as identity verification and other necessary steps are completed directly by the primary applicant.
Given your son's involvement in managing the majority of the application process, we would like to suggest updating the application to add him as the primary applicant. This adjustment would enable him to formally oversee all aspects of the process, ensuring compliance with our requirements and simplifying matters for yourself.”
When my mum responded that she felt the tone was a little agest and again she explained she visits my sister daily in the hospital she was ignored and told she MUST collect the car in person.
She responded by pointing out she had at the time of signing allocated someone to collect the car, paid her money, sold her other car and paid for insurance She is still being spoken to like a child unable to deal with the transaction.
She also pointed out that shes on holiday from the 26th but would be happy to take part in a FSA compliant video call and provide any written answers she was again replied to with a message she MUST attend in person.
Any suggestions of what to do next, as you can imagine she both no in the country from boxing day and secondly does not want to go to the dealership where they spoke to her like this, she just wants the car and to get on with life. If she cancels shes wasted a ton of money on a charger, her car sale and insurance.
Points raised above are valid. Needs some communication.Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago when they were doing the visual ID check via zoom with my mum, firstly they never sent a link at the arranged time and secondly, they were 45 mins late with no call until we messaged them.

I think it is perfectly reasonable of Tesla to say that given your level of involvement you should be named on the application.
My dad is 89 and I speak to businesses that he deals with on his behalf, but they know who I am and I have been given full authorisation to do so.
Is there a reason why you are not willing to do as Tesla suggest?
