Currently got an xc90 which tows a circa 2.2tonne of horses, it replaced a discovery 4 which was the worse car I've ever owned.

The xc90 is coming to the point where we might replace it in the next few months. We bought it at 3 years old as approved used with a 2 year warranty, it runs out soon.

Half looking at the new defender, Is there a current buyers guide out there? what to look for? are they better built than my disaster of a disco 4?

I've looked at the Ineos, the motorway 24mpg seems like a tough pill. New Landcruiser would be perfect, however there's not any one or two year old used approved yet, so that'll have to wait.

The XC90 has been brill, well built, space for kids, tows well, ideally, just needs a bigger engine, wish the did it with an IL6

Circa £40k tops, ideally with warranty as it’s the main family car, used for loading with dogs/kids and horse box towing.

Brand new, or nearly new KGM Rexton with a 5 year warranty.

We went Xc90 to 2008 Rangie then 2014 Rangie - very good for towing horses and good value 2nd hand but pick the year wisely if considering.

Defender is nice, vey fashionable now but suspect the prices are high

Why does the XC90 need replacing?

I’d prefer something with a bit more thrust, possibly something a little more rugged, or both

The new Defender looks great and will hold its appeal for years. Perhaps consider upping your budget and getting a Defender to keep for 5 years.

My new Defender went off on a low loader after dying on Christmas Day leaving me with a hire 2024 XC90 for the next 3 weeks or so till they fix the electrical stuff that’s borked.

Defender certainly feels and looks more “special” and more rugged and is certainly more spacious.

130 I presume? Our 110 is smaller inside than our XC90. It has great rear legroom, but rubbish boot.

Disco 5 D300. I had two before recently changing to an L460 FFRR.

They were great cars, never put a foot wrong. Offer a more luxurious approach than a Defender as well as being more practical.

Really underrated!

This looks like a nice one complete with air suspension and a tow bar. Moreover it’s a private seller so you get to meet the owner.

as I understand it, the defender has newer tech and extra effort but into the overall build quality etc.

thats expensive(same as a dealer price with twice the mileage), chavvy colour and the lowest amount of poke. I'm not against buying privately, it'd just need to be 15% less or so than a dealership.

I'd suggest taking a good look at the GV80 I listed above, the tech/fit & finish is on par with Volvo, they drive well too.

I agree that they need to be cheaper than a dealership, although 15% might be a touch ambitious. No doubt a few thousand off may be possible.
I just saw the 3.0 and Diesel bit and assumed they all had the same power output. I like the look of the Defender even though big 4x4’s aren’t my thing.
What would be your colour preference. Personally I think the green suits it well.

Whats the deal with servicing/warranty work on a Genesis at the moment in the UK? Can Hyundai do it?

Defender pricing seems all over the place really. My sister paid £62k for a 22 plate Defender recently (decent spec 3.0) which seemed toppy.

The facelift Disco 5 (21 onwards I think, so all the D300 configurations) has the same tech.

They've just got a different focus on the build - the Defender has a more utilitarian approach, whereas the Disco leans more towards luxury.
Disco's tend to come better specced, air suspension is standard across the range for example. The seats are more comfortable, the boot is hinged from the top so is easier to use, the bottom part of the tailgate folds down so can be used as a seat...

I could go on, but the best thing is to probably go sit in them and drive them to understand the differences and what would better suit you. I thought the Defender looked cooler from the outside, but the interior was nicer in the Disco and it was ultimately the better road car. Nice that they're cheaper, too!
