£15K Family Car

Looking to pick up a larger family car to replace my wife’s 330e.

The cabin is ok size wise but would fancy bigger. Main issue is the boot while it is fine for one pram (Egg), with our 2nd child on the way it just isn’t big enough.

Miles is around 12-15k annually but is basically just 15mile each way trips. Due to this I’m thinking diesel will cause issues but happy with any other fuel source (petrol, hybrid or EV).

I’d like to keep it to £15k but could stretch to £17.5k if it was very highly recommended.

Must be automatic and decently reliable.

Choice (wife’s) at the moment is a 2018 VW Tiguan with the 1.4L TSI engine and 60k miles.

Also open to any good PCP or lease deals

If you are looking at the Tiguan you may as well look at the Touran. You can get 3 child seats or 2 child seats plus adult in the middle row but you won't with a Tiguan. Also plenty of space if you need a double buggy and it balance bikes. I can get 2 kids bikes with ease in the boot of a compact 7 seater.

Auid a6 allroad would be my choice but there are other estates with higher ride height, volvo will do a petrol v60 cross country.

Bought a 2016 520d estate last year for the same reasons as you. Have been so impressed with it. Power is fine, great quality car with good space and seats etc. I’m not sure I’d worry about the diesel/short journey thing. I think it’s overplayed/overreported

If you can charge at home, Tesla Model S is a worthy contender.
Mind you I now also have a Skoda Superb and it is Superb.
I had the Tiguan 1.4 as a company car for a couple years in DSG guise. It typically averaged about 30-35 mpg.
I reckon small petrol engine in big car is false economy. Other than that, it was a fantastic family car (Although i think if it was my own money and I wanted an SUV, I'd get the Skoda Kodiaq

Having found myself in one (280 Sportline 4x4) almost by accident after getting sick of the problems with my Ford Ranger, I wholeheartedly agree.

Unfortunately Touran is a no as she doesn’t want the typical MPV shape.

Audi A6 allroad was a no but the A4 Allroad met approval. Though only diesel at our budget.

I’ve never had a car over 70k miles so the mileage to go an X5 or XC90 in budget is outside my usual realms of comfort. I know it’s probably a psychological barrier but £15k on a 100k car seems risky?

DS7 has been added to this list.

Kadjar she has said about a few times but I think I prefer the Arkana looks wise but will have a test drive and see.

Red Aerton very well liked.

CX-5 has been very high on my list since day one we actually looking at one today.

5 series and Skoda Superb were both my original thoughts/wants. Think SUVs are the trend at the moment but if I can get her to see good ones in the flesh might sway here.

I already have a Tesla Model 3 which is actually big enough for us. As much as it’s been great don’t think I could bring myself to have 2 of them on the drive at once . Skoda Enyaq 60, ID4 and E-Niro are the EVs in budget.

The Kia E-Niro fits all of those requirements I think. It's a bit blobby in appearance but it's SUV style, spacious and in budget.

Question - been looking at these, did you get one with heated seats and if not is it a major issue? Don’t think they’re standard on Sportline but didn’t want to rule it out, I’ve never had heated seats so won’t be missing them as it were.

So had a look around at loads of cars today but no test drives.

Strong favourite is the CX-5 however one we looked at was a dog.

2nd place the Renault Arkana and in third place new shape Nissan Qashqai.

VW stable while obviously great to live with didn’t really hit the mark.

Both quite disappointed with boot sizes on a lot of SUVs. Look big but aren’t really. Tesla Model 3 hasn’t helped as it’s very roomy inside and very practical.

We are looking at bigger estates now so the boot is long rather than tall but the idea has been floated just get another Model 3 and at least it will be quick and big enough. I’m pushing for a Skoda Superb for family car.

I may have steered the conversation towards the Model 3 is big enough and she can take it anytime. I could get something we could just use to run around in and not be a family car but obviously practical for emergencies. So hot hatches might be allowed but with budget creep a tidy I30N or RS Megane ain’t far off an M2 or M4

I agree with the boot comment on SUV's, we have a Q5 and the boot is A4 sized, an A6 avant is a fantastic family car, my dad has had one for 14 years and 140,000+ miles and it's still going strong, feels solid and well build still.

In my experience (others will 100% disagree) I wouldn't buy a French car if you want a robust family car. I ended up refusing to drive our French car when we had one, I have a French van on 125,000 and it's falling apart and had a top end rebuild. My 11 year old car (so still old and not worth any money) is on the same milage and feels like it will do the same again easy.

Check out which engine it has. The very early diesel was ok (2015 ish) but then there was a period of unreliability with the new ingenium engines. Worth a search on PH.

And check this issue which requires the whole the dash removed to fix.

Personally I’d avoid older discovery sports. Your other options are likely to be far more reliable.

Hi Sorry, I've only just seen this. Mine is nicely spec'd and has heated seats, upgraded sound system and the pano roof. I'd not had heated seats before but I've been really enjoying them on my 15 mile occasional commute these last few weeks. One of those things that once you have it you don't want to be without but the heater is pretty decent so it's not like you'd freeze without the bum warmers!
