Hi All,

I have come across a 24 plate MX-5 that has done 50k miles and is currently being listed at a national retailer for less than half the RRP.

The catch appears to be that it has had 5 owners within one year.

Would this be enough to put you off or am I being overcautious as otherwise it seems quite a good price.

I'm thinking that it has maybe been pre-registered and then possibly in a family where a parent has transferred it to a son or daughter before selling it on.

50 thousand in miles in an MX-5 from five owners within a year? Very strange.

If it's the one on Autotrader it's actually a 2018 car.

I did notice that but on the dealers website it says 2024, seems quite a big error when listed a care.

It's a shame that the reg isn't shown to confirm.

I’m pretty confident it’s a 2018 car, SE-L Nav is an ND1 spec, if it was ND2 it would be SE-L+ and I think the ND3 doesn’t even have it as a spec

The spec has it as 129bhp also so ND1 as ND2 on is 130 bhp

Imported cars often have the year of registration on A/T ads, the data take from DVLA. Is it an import? Lazy listers don't change it.

Performance stats are often incorrect too.

I have an MX5 ND and it’s sort of a daily. Mine has done 30k miles since 2019 and it’s still fine. There are stone chips at the front (to be expected). I’ve also had a new roof which was outside of warranty but part Mazda funded. I am however the second owner and the car has FSH. If you do go for it then things to watch are:

Leading edge of the hood as when folded back this can run on the back of the roll hoops. You’d be looking at £2k for a new hood covering.

Hub carrier bushes (rear). If these fail it’s over £1500 at a main dealer to change both sides. There will be rear suspension noise over bumps at low speed.

Gearbox can be weak but I’m not sure if this is an issue with the 1.5s.

AC can fail as a pipe cracks - just check the AC.

Look for the general state of the underside - what you can see as there are covers.

As per other comments I think 50k and 5 owners on one year for an MX5 is unlikely.
