Morning all,

What are the nuances involved with the selling of a car to someone in the Isle of Man?

Google's only giving me results for buying into IOM from the UK (which I'm sure covers most things anyway but just want to be certain).

Thanks

For the seller it’s no different to selling to a U.K. buyer. You take payment and then complete the new keeper slip on the V5C or do it online.

Once the buyer owns the car, it then becomes their responsibility to manage export etc. and any paperwork.

I used to work at a place that regularly sold, and shipped stuff to the IOM. It has a UK postcode (since 1993).

As above, it’s the same as selling a car in U.K. They can even drive it around for the first 12m on U.K. plates. After that, it’ll need a road worthiness test (Manx MOT) so they can get it registered with Manx plates. Not difficult at all.

Cheers folks. The buyer was saying he needs a full copy of the V5C to register it in IoM, and looking at the IoM gov page, this appears to be correct. So I assume I just do the usual online stuff and give him the copy of the V5C?

Kind of flies in the face of DVLA's advice to destroy it and to not share it

Actually, just on the DVLA now and there's a 'permanent export' section which I need to use for IoM, gonna see what the crack is with it now.

Do not fill out permanent export, you are not exporting the car it is being taken to another part of the UK. Fill it in normally!

Selling or buying from IOM NI Scotland Wales etc is the same as selling it to someone in Essex. Just fill in the new keeper part, do not permanently export the car.

IOM is not part of the U.K. It’s a crown dependency and makes its own laws. However, if you keep a copy of the V5c, you can notify DVLA online that you no longer own the car and tell them who you sold it to. With or without the permanent export section completed, the new owner will need the log book to register it there:

The buyer doesn't NEED the full V5 but its a headache registering the car again on the IOM without it (ask me how I know!)
Depending on the age of the car will depend on if it needs the Manx test or not but that's for the buyer to worry about

Surprisingly easier to sell than to buy from the IOM
