Hi All

I currently have an F40 (69 plate) M135iX and need to sell to release some equity (pay off loan, so mortgage people like me more)

Looking at cars for £12k budget. I do around 12-15k miles annually so need something reasonably efficient. I would like an auto.

Current list is:

Golf GTD (80k+ miles to fit in price bracket)
Golf GTI (as above)
420d
320d Estate

It needs to be family car and tech upgradable as I love Android Auto.

Could you share some insight into what would be more or less reliable in terms of engine, etc, and any other suggestions you might have for a suitable car.

Thank you

Stick to BMW

Find an approved used car by the end of the month and you'll get 2 years warranty.

If a Golf is big enough then a Kia Ceed with the balance of the manufacturers warranty should fit the bill.

Don’t think BMW and reliable go together, especially not N47 engined BMW’s.

Most reliable? I'd be looking at a Honda or Lexus. 12k will get you a nice Civic or CR-V, or all manner of IS, RX and GS Lexus.

Passat 2.0TDI, comfy, quick enough, loads of kit, loads of room.

Skoda Octavia or superb.

Don’t think they 2.0tdi engines have many problems, I had a Leon 184 with the same engine and box as the GTD, changed the oil in the box every 40k and in 130k never had a single breakdown.

Lots of flat tires though as mine was on 18s, you’ll get more Leon for your money than you will golf.

Similarly I found superbs cheaper than Octavia’s.

Hatchback wise the Infiniti Q30, is a great buy & you can add Carplay/Android Auto, the last one has adaptive cruise:

If you want reliable, good on fuel and some poke then the 1.5 Civic turbo is a good bet. They also come with a reasonable amount of kit. 180bhp yet 50mpg is possible.

Other option is a VAG product, not quite Honda reliability (but not much is). On your budget I would be looking at a Skoda Octavia vRS or a Seat Leon FR rather than the equivalent Golf.

Which are the N47 engines? The 2015 onward 320d engine is the B47 isn't it?

I was going to post a link to what I've found but it won't let me. There's a 4 series for sale in an independent dealer (420d gran coupe) and a golf GTD with 87k on the clock. Wondering if anyone has either of these and could shed some light, bad and good

Just thinking that BMW servicing will be inherently expensive and VAG will come in cheaper? Though not sure what servicing is like on the DSG boxes, I've read horror stories from those who haven't bothered to service them regularly

Golfs will be water pump and thermostat along with weak clutches.

Personal opinion is proper cared for BMWs with the 2L diesel offer best bang for your buck between reliability and actually being decent to drive. Buy on condition with full service history a must! Stick to servicing yearly and taking care of it and you should be fine.
