Hi PH

Not new to Pisron Heads but this is my first post so please be gentle!
As the title suggests, I'm in the market for a new motor. I'd like an SUV as it gives good leg room in the rear for my 2 teenage lads and I like the commanding driving position they offer. I only do about 6k miles per year so I'm thinking petrol is a must I can't bear auto boxes so it's going to have to be a manual too. I'd also like to keep it no older than 2016 as that's when android auto seems to be an option as standard . So, with all that in mind, my shortlist so far is, Subaru Forester 2.0, Honda CR V 2.0 or the Ford Kuga 1.5T. Can anyone offer any wisdom on these 3 options as to why one is better than the other? I'm a bit anti French cars too so please don't suggest a Peugeot, Renault or Citroen! My budget is around £8k but could stretch a bit further for the right car!

Fair enough.

Petrol manual definitely limits you to stuff like tiguans and x-trails and stuff like that. Q3, X3, Honda CRV etc.

The yeti is an interesting about.

Foresters are great but not very high and not that roomy.

Might get a Volvo XC40 petrol for around £11k. The Volvo autos are pretty good though and many people spec them with auto...

What has put you off autos?

I never liked them, but it turns out the issue was I'd only driven them with poxy little engines.

Shove several hundred foot pounds from a reasonable-sized V8 through them and they're a lot more pleasant.

Also, if you have only driven an older auto, go and try a modern 8-speed or 9-speed. They are completely different. I love a manual in my weekend car, but wouldn't consider anything other than an auto for my daily driver.

Yes, I know it limits my quite a bit as I do like the X3 and Q3. I could go Honda CRV but have heard it's a bit of a boring ride.

I'm a bit of a badge snob so not sure about the Skoda!

The Forester is currently my number 1 choice but there's not many about. What's the manual box like in these? I know it not the highest of the 3 but it's generally taller than most standard cars. Being a Subaru, I know it will be well put together.

That's the thing, I don't want an auto. Beautiful cars though!

My last auto was the 8 speed offering by BMW in the F11. Same engine as my old 320d but no where near as quick (I appreciate ita bigger lump) or as nice to drive.
I just cant stand the creep!
Unfortunately, I'm not lucky enough to have a weekend car and a daily driver!

I realize everybody has different opinions and needs, but who wants a manual SUV?
I have a manual sports car and I do love it. Manual also suits certain cars like hot hatches, especially pre 2010 ones.
But a modern SUV? I would certainly want to be automatic.

Do try one, in case you haven’t driven one recently. I love the interaction I get driving my manual 911 but it adds zero driving enjoyment in a Skoda Yeti or any other SUV, imho. On the contrary, again imho.

If the age thing is only about having android auto/carplay it’s worth mentioning that just about anything that came with a screen of some description can now have some sort of very oem looking modern CarPlay unit fitted. My 2011 5 series has a very factory looking system and unlike most actual 2016 oem systems, it’s wireless. Just something to consider at least. But otherwise I think yeti above is a great idea!

There are manual ones, your issue is most people buying an SUV buy autos. Try a modern 7/8 speed.

We had a few, best one was a 2005 2.5XT with the prodrive pack. 280bhp, really handled like an Impreza just with a bit more roll. I haven’t driven any of the newer ones but I would imagine they’ll be fine. Don’t overlook the outback - a legacy with higher ground clearance. Roomy, comfortable, capable.

The answer to this is a Peugeot 3008, but the OP said no French cars. Great looking though. I think they’d be quite a few manual 1.2 petrols for £10k.
