I'm trying to sell my car through Motorway, and they have just come back and said that there is outstanding finance flagged on the car. This was bought by me without finance from a brand dealership.

I've run my own HPI check and sure enough it is flagged as having outstanding finance through its previous reg (which is now changed to my private plate).

I will of course contact the dealer and ask them to clarify, but has anyone seen this before? I obviously was told no outstanding finance when the dealer sold the car to me. Looks like a query can be raised with HPI to try and resolve but this can take up to 10 working days and the purpose of using Motorway was to try and move the car on quickly.

A bit shocked. Any advice?!

I’ve seen this before - was the previous plate also a private plate? For example : AB1 > YG24 OXC > CD2 with your plate being CD2 and the finance marker showing against AB1?

Yes, exactly this. HPI report shows against the previous reg (the original). Any idea how to fix?

Can you re-run an HPI check on the chassis number?

It’s back to the branded dealership you bought it from I’m afraid. They will have done checks when they stocked the vehicle initially and must have something on file to prove clean title for them to sell it to you.

I don’t want to piddle-on-your-parade but it won’t be a quick fix in my experience - depending on how long you’ve owned it and how interested the selling dealership is in resolving it for you. Whether your Motorway purchaser wants to complete on the sale is another question - one which only they can answer.

HPI updates its records fortnightly or at least they used too so this should take no more than a month to fix if you've just missed the last update but it is a regular occurrence on cars with private plates over multiple chassis and whilst annoying can be sorted so do speak to the dealer you bought it from.

Thanks all - if anyone's interested in the conclusion... Phoned the dealer first thing Monday morning, they said it was an HPI record mistake and to leave it with them. Twenty minutes later I got a certificate forwarded to me from the Finance company confirming they had no interest in the car.

Selling party was happy to take that so all sorted quickly!

HPI data is live and can be updated instantly, it’s just most people do daily uploads so markers appear/ remove overnight.
