Downgrade £10k budget
Discussion
Looking to sell the Mercedes E43 Estate to free up some cash and replace with something upto £10k, but not sure what to get.
I like the idea of getting a hot hatch like a golf GTI or Golf R but most the Golf R's on auto trader under £10k are Cat cars and not sure show i feel about that. Like the idea of a GTI especially as a manual.
The other option is to get something like a BMW 640d, had a 640D GC a few years ago and it was a really nice car, seen a couple under 10k and i feel like it is a lot of car for the money, but considering im using it mainly as a station car, with the once a month 400 mile motorway round trip it might be too big. Same story with the Mercedes CL500, again really like these but maybe too big. Other big disadvantage of the 6 series is having to pay ULEZ everyday, so maybe a petrol would be better.
Other left field choice is a 3.0 BMW z4 coupe, i really like these but maybe not ideal for a daily station car.
Not keen of the Mercedes A class, and dont really know what else to consider.

If you're looking at Z4 Coupes then maybe have a look at Caymans? A well loved high miles 2.7 does come well within budget regularly.
I got a 1.5 Mini Cooper recently to do my daily commuting duties and I think I hit the sweet spot with that. It's brisk enough to keep up with traffic, fun enough on the back road and soooo sooo cheap to run. 44mpg with me flat out everywhere and £20 a year to tax. Even on long journeys it doesn't feel like a hardship if I'm being honest. As long as you get one with cruise control then just set a speed and keep to it for your motorway runs.
