Recommend me a car for my Girlfriend

Just go to a car supermarket or something and let her decide. That way you can't be blamed for when it breaks.
This is the best plan really. We can suggest cars if you can give some more detailed criteria. Ask her what things she would value in a car. A Sunday trip to a local car supermarket is a great way to poke round many different makes and models to get a better idea. They're often unlocked so you can sit in them to see what she likes.
Never really understood this thought process, the whole "What car for the wife?" question to a load of randoms on the internet... bit like posting "Wife wants to go for dinner, sub £50, no meat, London" when in reality, said wife / girlfriend must have some idea of what she likes? Or what does she not like? And what's "not ancient?" As in a 1960 Morris Minor or does she think an 8 year old Mini is ancient? So many options out there... I think you need to zone in a bit more unless she genuinely doesn't care and will drive pretty much anything within reason that is presented to her?

Girlfriend wants a new car:
10k top-end budget.
No diesels.
Must have a good Euro-NCAP rating.
Preferably simple mechanics or a reliable car.
Not ancient.
Oh, and she doesn't want a car "that's used as a taxi".
TIA
"Not ancient" is difficult to quantify. Some people consider anything under 20 years old to be ok, others consider it ancient once the 3 year warranty runs out!10k top-end budget.
No diesels.
Must have a good Euro-NCAP rating.
Preferably simple mechanics or a reliable car.
Not ancient.

To be left field ... how about a VW Golf in a frock?

Plenty available cheaper ... but just picked one at random at around your top budget with reasonable miles/age.
Under 10k - tick
No diesels - tick
Good NCAP rating - not a clue! Nothing for sale these days is unsafe, so I rarely bother to check ... especially now the ratings are more focused on 'aids' than actually how it performs in a crash.
Simple mechanics/reliable - VW seem to do OK, and just about any garage in the country will be able to work on it when needed
Not ancient - no idea how your missus views ancient, but it qualifies to me!
Not used as a taxi - I've never seen one!
