Looking for a 7 seater...
Discussion
Good morning all, first post on the forums here...
I'm in the market for a 7 seater, blended family is expanding and we like to do camping trips and road trips. Budget is anything up to £4000 and the cars I've seen in that budget are largely 2011-2015 models.
Options include:
Vauxhall Zafira tourer
VW Touran
Qashqai +2
Ford Grand C-Max or S-Max
Open to any other suggestions or any advice about what to stay away from!

We have a 2011 XC90, it was a lot more than budget 2 years ago, cost us circa 10k.
But they were made like 2005-2014 so there will be a lot in budget, we have the 2.4 5 cylinder diesel, it came in lesser powers, we have the 200PS version I wouldn't recommend the lower powered version as the car weighs 2.5T

Do you need seating for 7 plus room for camping gear? In that case you need a van / minibus as most 7 seat cars have the rear seats in the boot.
Not necessarily, I need it more frequently for the seating. When it comes to the trips I'd probably get a roof box for luggage and equipment. We ended up with a 7 seater Fiat 500L during covid, as we got it for a great price, when prices weren't great! To be honest we mostly have the rear seats down and use the extra big boot which works for us, but I don't have much experience of it actually as a 7 seater because of that.
What I would say is it's been a very reliable motor! Don't actually think we've had any issues with it other than it does like a drink (both oil and petrol) and it gets some abuse taking 3 little kiddies around most of the time.

The Vauxhall Combo Life comes in an XL version with 7 seats. They are usually quite cheap. The Ford Tourneo is also an option?
I would be far happier putting money int one of these than a Volvo XC90 just for the running costs and mechanical simplicity. They're fairly commercial but should also be cheap to run and repair.

Mazda 5 or a Qashqai +2 are the favourites right now. I'm looking at two 1.6L Mazdas both from 2012.
I'm also looking a nice Renault Grand Scenic, low mileage and tax but I don't know if the French cars are any good?
Would it be worth considering a Chevrolet Orlando? Can pick one of them up for not much. I know Chevrolet don't supply or make any cars for Europe anymore, I had a Epica saloon a few years back and found parts tricky to get hold of.

The Chevy Orlando is a good option provided it is cheap as I don't think they are particularly reliable. I assume most parts are shared with a Zafira but not sure.I'm also looking a nice Renault Grand Scenic, low mileage and tax but I don't know if the French cars are any good?

If it was me I'd be a lot more comfortable spending a little extra on a Honda / Mazda / Toyota. How about a Toyota Verso?
Also, I'd try to avoid diesels unless they have had a DPF filter replaced. Are you near a ULEZ zone? Pre-2014 diesels can be a problem for Ulez.
