So I'm selling the wife's kia soul. It's on a private plate. Do I need to go on line, pay the £80 to put it on retention. Then wait till the new V5 drops though the door in a weeks or so before I sell it, or car I sell it now as soon as I change the plate. I'm assuming you need to wait till the new V5 turns up. I'd be selling privately.

Assuming you're not selling to a friend who will help you transfer the plate afterwards then yes you need to get the plate off it and have the correctly corresponding v5 to actually execute the sale. Obviously nothing to stop you advertising it before the plates are swapped.

Agreed, do it now before selling. The replacement V5 doesn't take too long these days.

Postal plate changes don't appear to be taking too long, but online can be instant.

Don't forget to let the insurance company know.

Online are instant 99% of the time, but you will need to wait 7-10 days for the replacement V5 which will be needed to move it in to the buyers name and stop the road tax.....

Do it on line today and they'll allocate (reallocate) a reg number for it, hopefully the original especially if you still have the original plates.
Last time I did it in December I had the new V5 back within 3 days.

You could advertise it from now but stating that the private reg has been removed and its new reg is... just also mention in the ad you are awaiting the new V5.
