I made a post quite some time ago about a replacement for our Corsa as we are coming close to the end of our lease term. However that post was more about "what can I buy to tow my MX-5".

I've came across a 2018 Superb for around £12k with 120k miles. I like the Superb and I believe my wife does as well (she wants to see it in person obviously) so this may or may not be the car, perhaps not this specific car at that price but a Superb priced upto £18k.

Not sure if I'm allowed to link ads here?Ad here This is the spec: 2.0 TSI SportLine Estate 5dr Petrol DSG 4WD Euro 6 (s/s) (280 ps)

Is 120k miles high for these cars? Is £12k too much for that mileage? Market is kinda nuts so have zero idea where this stands on the value for money.

Our use case is quite simple. Space for dog, comfy, reliable, needs to tow at least 1600kg. We do not do motorway miles, infact the furthest we drive on a regular basis is around 15 miles and throughout the summer we may take longer drives up north but other than that it's purely a utility vehicle for hauling st.

Any advice?

Yes, you can link to ads on here as long as they're not your own.

I had a Superb L&K 280 for a number of years, bought from a main dealer during covid for £21k and sold after a couple of years for £21k (sub 40k miles). Great family cars and the 280 meant it had a chunk of speed on hand whenever I fancied a play. It liked a drink though, especially around town so not sure it'll be ideal for towing and short distances.

It's the 2.0 litre VW lump and I'm led to believe that it's fairly reliable. How long are you planning on keeping it and how many miles will you be doing?

120k miles in 7 years isn't terrible, but it might have been a taxi. I've never fully understood how 100k+ mileage cars can hang on to so much value these days, I'd always go for a lower mileage, or look for a cheap price for high mileage.

I have access to CAP (so could see if its a good price or not) but you can access reasonably accurate pricing info using Auto Trader (pretend to "sell" the car, enter the mileage and reg plate and it will suggest values).

I usually like to know a cars trade in/selling to trade value when buying, just so I know how much depreciation I'm starting with from day one, should circumstances change on a sixpence and the car needs to go.

Arnold Clark, Vertu Motors and Motorpoint are my top three I use for this.

The fuel consumption is a bit of a shame. We are planning on keeping it until it goes boom or becomes uneconomical to repair, resale value isn't something we care about. We have another car if we need one in a pinch.

That seems steep, but prices now are always slightly out of step with expectations I think.

All I can say about these cars is I spent 4 weeks absolutely thrashing the life out of one (think driving like you've stolen it) and it didn't miss a beat. 4 large blokes in it as well.

Was incredibly comfortable, rapid (easily up to 150mph+) and handled exactly like you expected it to.

Great cars, the only reason I don't have one is the need for ease of access for kids baby seats!

That one looks nice but as above, check it's not an ex taxi (or worse ex job car, unless it was a driver training car, I wouldn't touch it).

Arnold Clark offer with 127,000 miles.

I'd avoid that one.

18k per year is not really that much and if it was a taxi he did not do very well at it.

Its only 340-350 miles per week, I used to do 1000+ miles per week as a field based manager

No idea if it represents value for money but I tend to buy on history and condition nowadays

The 280 would be an odd choice for a taxi, surely?

I tow with mine, it's the 2.0TD so I get 40mpg towing or 60+ on it's own, bloody brilliant cars with just over 2T tow capacity. That price looks about right, 4x4 probably why.

280 Round town is not great I usually get around 300 miles out of a tank on a run however I’ve had over 40mpg.

This is similar to what I used to get. <30mpg around town and 36-40mpg on a run. It's a large car with a 280bhp 4-pot and a large turbo so not entirely unexpected laugh

The back of these is great for kid access IMO given the amount of space. The rear footwells are cavernous. I only sold mine to move to an EV for tax reasons.

I wouldn’t take any notice of that, these are where trade values go out of the window a bit, the 280 is rare and what guides say they should be listed at in reality is nothing like the prices wanted.

If that’s the 7 speed then dsg should have oil changes every 80k, it should also have had the Haldex oil changed more than a few times. If it’s DCC suspension they do leak and they can be £500 a corner for genuine, less if you buy the Monroe shocks

I tow with mine, it’s 1800kg limit, it’s not a patch on my old Mondeo and the rear suspension is quite poor, I’ve fitted spring assisters to help

I’ve had mine since June 24, I paid 17k it’s a 16 plate with 76k, it had just about every extra.

So far I have -

Changed the PCV £120
The sat nav/radio/carplay just disappeared overnight £120
The tailgate strut failed £110 for a pair (genuine are £680 each)
Front Brake pads as the ones the dealer fitted rattled £230 genuine
White line rear anti roll bar to fit £200

Future plans are

Remap
Suspension
Injector clean
Smaller wheels

However mine gives me back ache after an hour, I haven’t found a comfortable position yet.

Mpg, towing anywhere between 18 and 25mpg

On a run mid to high 30’s, long term average is 26.5 according to the car.

Would I buy another - no, if I could relive last year I would have gone with a 530d or V90 D5, but I wanted petrol, if I found something I knew I liked this would go.

However the boot is massive.

Update on this. Back to square one and the clock lease is ticking. Went to view and the missus initially liked it but then she clocked both an S90 and an A6 Avant S (not S6) for sale as well.

She prefered both of these to the Skoda, however she said if the V90 is the same as the S90 except the boot she would like one of those but of course she really wanted the A6 (which was £21k, 3k over budget).

So basically I have acheived nothing. We already went to view an A4 Avant last week but it was in a bit of a mess, paint was pretty bad + the odd dent, front rotors have a 1.5mm lip on them and the engine bay smelt like old oil. Not sure if old leak, new leak or someone done an oil change and never cleaned up.

Either way I think I'm going to end up with an A6 and from my limited reading these cars have a plethora of issues. Guess I'll make a new thread in a few weeks with the final outcome.

Kill me.

Final update on this. We found a nicely spec'd V90 for sale and nabbed it a couple weeks ago.

No pictures at this time but it's a run of the mill 2.0 TDI, 2017 in blue. Really nice to drive, a bit rough in 1st gear due to engine noise but smooths out once you're going. Probably overpaid for it but the wife loved it at first sight and it ticks all my boxes so didn't want to go around the loop again.

Cheers or advice here and any other threads I may have created about this in the past.

In your opinion I wouldn’t swap my superb for a Volvo especially after the horror stories my mate tells me every time I see him !
