Looking for inspo/advice on a new family SUV
Discussion
Hi everyone. Currently drive a 5008 and have done for the last few years as we needed a car that fit 3 car seats across the back. These days the older kids are outgrowing the need for car seats, but still need a car capable of transporting 5 people, and potentially nice to have 2 additional seats sometimes though thats not essential.
The 5008 has been great, but fancy a change and have been looking at all sorts of stuff. The wife has seen the Defender 110, but personally i'm not so keen on JLR - if anything goes wrong we just need it fixed, quickly, and i dont believe i'll get that from them (maybe thats not warranted/misguided).
We also do lots of short trips (school run) of say 5 miles each way and then some dual carriage way driving mid week to shops and of a weekend, but not lots of miles. Typically average around 7-8k per annum all in. Reason i mention it is that alot of these cars are more readily available as Diesel and often better value used as the Petrol ones are fewer in number. Could a diesel make sense or am i better off sticking with my gut feel that Petrol is the one?
In terms of cars, looking at alternatives and nothing really grabbing me. I've considered the following:
Defender 110 - petrol thirsty / diesel seems better but short journeys as above / JLR experience
Cayenne - can get petrol but is thirsty, not sure how big inside
X5 - seems the most pricey, but read good things, can have 7 seats but mainly 5
Q7 - massive, can get petrol and hybrid option but loses the 7 seats
Or a leftfield choice of something like an estate car? Just needs to fit 3 people in the back comfortably
Anything else? Ideally want something nice to last a good few years.
Thanks all

Would highly recommend a Skoda Superb estate for this. There are some quite powerful and high spec versions about, both diesel and petrol.
Used to have an Octavia, loved it. Its the missus i need to convince these days, she has in her head the German brands at the moment. Will take a look at this as the Octavias are niceSkodillac said:

I know how hard it is to get people over badge-brain sometimes...
If the missus has also got SUV-brain as well as badge-brain though, maybe the Skoda Kodiaq would please her more.

ive had them all..... best one ive had is q7..... bombproof and 40 to the gallon at 75mph on the motorway.... I im only sell mine after 3 years because my kids are entering teen agers and we need a bit more room for our trips to the Alps..... although im tempted to buy another one...

I've just been through this, coming from an MPV. Problem is, most cars are still not comfortable for three across regardless of child seats. The outside seats are designed for comfort, leaving the middle seat as a narrow space designed to accommodate an arm rest / drinks holder. The backs can be hard too
I stuck my kids (7, 10, 11) into a Skoda Enyaq and they were a bit cramped / arms across eachother. The Kodiaq was slightly better. Kia EV3 was too tight, although the EV6, EV9 and Sportage were a bit better.
Renault Scenic is a cool car but no good for three across, worse than the others (despite it's heritage). Ford Explorer and Capri were ok but not great.
The two which were roomiest were the MG HS and Vauxhall Grandland. I went for the latter which is a roomier e3008 effectively.
One option which could be fun is an ID.Buzz...
