After 18 months with his 2009 Mini he is keen to get himself a new car, ideally something a little sporty.

He seems keen on a circa 2000 2.0 BMW Z3 but I am less so. He seems a little oblivious to the potential maintenance costs and knows best.

Anyway, I am trying to think of alternatives which will still come in under £5k but also give him what he is looking for but also maybe less old. Also reasonable on the insurance as he will only have 1 years no claims this coming June.

The added complication is he is off to Uni in September and so the car will be with us for most of the next year, and probably won't get driven that much other than when he is home. Also not garaged either, and thats where my Rover Mini is stored. Another reason why I feel such a purchase is not making much sense to me.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Is this really a good car and am I overthinking the ongoing costs? Are there better options that will appeal to his wishes for something more "modern classic"?

Thanks in advance

Z4 would be less hassle and wouldn't mind living outside. Limited mileage policy might not be so expensive if he's not driving it - although check out the recent insurance thread, who actually knows.

As the owner of a Z3 I love it but they're becoming very spendy and time consuming to keep in good condition. I wouldn't recommend one to a 19 year old student, but I admire the enthusiasm! A Z4 would be a more sensible option, to be honest it's the car i should've bought.

Getting a BMW for a 19 year old must be one of the more interesting proposals that I wouldn't dream of entertaining if I wanted to keep my family intact.

Fiat Barchetta, bit of a left field choice.

Might be tricky to insure being a left hooker?

OP knows it's the correct choice. For 5k you might even find one with all the welding and rust already taken care of....or a 2.5 z4 or the 2.0 z3 he mentioned, 5k shoululd find you a looked after one that's been well maintained that shouldn't really give you much grief. All three fairly easy to work on/cheap to fix and get parts for.

I'd be looking at:

E92/93 325i or 130i
Civic type R ~2010
Golf 2.0 TSI convertible, else a scirocco 2.0
Alfa Brera/GT
Mercedes CLC 180k or SLK 180

A proper small engined sports car will likely be a nightmare to insure/run

Good luck finding a BMW of that vintage which doesn't need many times its value spending on corrosion!

If he's not using it much and will be doing low mileage, why not go for something classic or retro and keep it covered when not in use. Something older. Opens up a whole world of interesting stuff.

And heartache hehe

If I were a student I'd take my car with me to Uni. Why buy a car & leave it behind?

That's a weird one...never heard of that before! (Although it's about a 1,000 years since I went away to Poly hehe)

Who on earth can police that? (and why would they hehe)

its quite common these days we have found when they are staying in halls in year one - they just don't have the room for hundreds/thousands of students with their cars...once in year 2 and they are living with friends in a house then its no problem of course..
