Thought I would ask on here as I have had help before and my Mrs is doing my head in! biggrin

She wants a new car but doesn t know what and keeps changing her mind. She currently has a 107 that has been brilliant despite her having it for the last 6 years or so. Although she says it s old now and wants something newer.

She does about 25 miles a day going work and back down one junction on the motorway. Then the bits of running around she does. If we ever go any distance I drive in my car.

She wants reliable and cheap to run. 107 costs peanuts! But maybe with a few mod cons.

Budget is £6k-£8 ish really but could go slightly higher. I am reluctant to spend a massive amount though as she doesn t exactly treat her cars that well

Options I have thought

Newer Aygo/108 etc but she says she d like something a bit bigger. Also looking at newish ones it s hard to see the value at £8k+ seam expensive for what they are.

Fiat 500, I changed the oil on my mates daughters one today and my Mrs commented that she liked it. I know nothing about them though and I think it s a similar size to her 107

Ford Fiesta really like the look of these and being a Ford I d imagine would drive quite nicely. Although I have read the 1.0 turbo offers good performance and economy. They blow up and are best avoided? Of is this blown out of proportion on the internet?

VW Up again don t know much about them. Maybe a classier aygo?

VW polo might be out of our price range for a decent one.

Toyota Yaris? Most reliable option? The newer shape hybrid looks great but not in budget I don t think so would need to be an older model.

Just after the most reliable, low running costs run of the mill hatchback really.

Thanks everyone

Please don't go anywhere near the 1.0 ecoboost ford's , They are just a disaster waiting to happen and even when they don't its still a very expensive wet belt replacement every few years for her , it's not blown out of proportion they are as bad as people say.

Have you thought about a Suzuki Swift?

There's 2018' SZ5's with the 1.0 litre turbo that come with adaptive cruise control , reversing camera , lane departure warning , android auto , apple carplay etc that are well within budget.

They use a timing chain that will probably never need replaced and the little 1.0 turbo will feel like a race car compared to her 107.

Have owned 3 suzuki cars and all three where bulletproof for reliability.

Kia Picanto, probably better off with the 4 cylinder 1.2 than the 1.0 3 cylinder turbo.

If you can charge at home then she's prime use case for electric. There's now a huge range of used EVs for under 8k.

Similar situation and we bought a Leaf (which now sits alongside the 107 that will go to middle child to learn on next year!). Lots of choice, Tekna level has all mod cons and then some, and it costs peanuts to run on an overnight cheap-rate EV tariff (we granny charge ours) and requires minimal servicing. Looks can be challenging, but my missus says they are growing on her biggrin

I concur with the Leaf concept on a use-needs scenario.

That said, if your Wife is wanting something bigger and bullet-proof then I’d be looking at the Nissan Juke and the SsangYong Tivoli. Both very competent cars…

It does sound like a Honda Jazz or a Toyota Yaris, although potentially an age / image thing as she's still working rather than retired....

Fiat 500 is a similar size to the 107, although perhaps seen as a bit more chic!
As mentioned before, Suzuki Swift is a good shout, although possibly worth considering a Skoda Fabia or an Audi A1, depends if your wife is a badge snob....

Suzuki swift is a great car. We have had a 1.2 in the family for 5 years, no issues, nice drive, would recommend
We had a 1.2 fiat 500 for a similar time, likewise no major issues but needed a bit more ongoing maintainence - door handles, odd electrical glitches

Thank you for the reply’s everyone. I have missed the Mrs again as with shift work we can be ships passing in the night.

Kia/ swift etc cars i never thought of so will speak to her. It’s a shame about the ecobooms.

Electric I am very much on the fence. Been very anti electric in the past but I can see the positives for them now. Although I still don’t believe they are saving the world and are super green. The electricity still needs to be generated and the precious metals mined but I digress!
How does an older battery hold up now? We would need to get a charger fitted at home.

Even looked at finance deals last night. In many ways with me working away it would make sense she has a brand new car. Any trouble the garage can sort it out. Although it’s so expensive and my Mrs doesn’t fancy a monthly bill and I can’t say I blame her being honest.

I think we paid about £2.5k for her 107 6 years ago, few bits and bobs over the years but even if it gets given away now. That is cheap motoring!

On the EV front, I have a Kia Soul that was £6k a year ago, I charge it on a 3 pin plug once or twice a week, 120 miles of range at the moment.

CarPlay, heated seats and wheels and loads of space in the front and back. As a run about car it has cost nothing to run in the last 12 months.

Slightly bigger than some of the other mentions, but I'm currently driving a Volvo V40 and they're superb for the money IMO. Nice place to be, comfy seats, pretty quiet for a hatch and have 'big car' things like cruise control, sat nav, heated seats, heated windscreen, digital cluster, etc. Feels rock solid too.

Had mine for 2 years taking it from 80k to 105k and only had to change tyres and brakes.

Renault Zoe.

I recommended my B-i-L try one last year when he was looking for a new (used) car. He was a little 'anti EV' or specifically worried about how it fit into his life.

...Long story short, he now owns a Zoe and loves it. Charges at home overnight on the 3-pin charger and occasionally for free if visiting the office.

His and the families usage / journey profiles are perfect for an EV and are your wife's OP.

Thanks everyone. Quite surprised how I am anti electric and she doesn’t like change. But she likes the idea of a Zoe!

Need to do a bit of research now as I know nothing about them but will update the thread when she gets something.

Thanks everyone

Just whatever you do, if you go for a Zoe don't get a battery leased version,

What do you mean? You buy the car but still lease the battery? Sounds odd and expensive!

I will keep an eye for that thank you
