Hi

I am looking at buying either a Jaguar FType V8 450HP AWD or a Porsche Boxster 718.

There are several models within the Porsche Boxster range and I wanted some help deciding which way to go.

I have driven both cars convertible/ coupe (Cayman) models.

I was close to buying a FType but the poor customer service pushed me away from the model and the Boxster really looks good.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Also if anyone has had any issues that would be helpful to know as well.

Thanks

Why? There’s so much horsest posted on here about F6’s it’s probably the most overrated engine on this site. Yes it sounds “nice” but it comes at a vast premium price over the rest of the range.

Great chassis though. The v8 is vastly better but for a comparatively light footed sports car one of the 718 turbos is certainly worth consideration.

I have just been through this. I wanted something nice with two seats and have driven the Alpine, Emira, F type and Cayman.

In the end I bought a Cayman GTS 4.0 Manual an week ago, it gave me a massive grin with the auto blip and was much more engaging that the pdk. The pdk is so good but in my mind it was so clinical the manual makes it feel like you are more engaged and I haven’t had a manual for about 12 years.

I drove an alpine but struggled due to no arm rest and just didn’t think it was good long distance with lack of storage etc, loved the sabelt seats though.

The Emira looks amazing but the paint problems and the fact lotus won’t extend the warranty past three years spoilt it.

I then drove the Cayman 4.0 pdk and manual and loved the manual as mentioned.

Then I found a F type Reims edition 5.0 V8, cheaper than the cayman , newer, less miles and a two year warranty.

I found the interior a bit bland and although the engine sounded great it didn’t handle like the Cayman of course. It only had 3k on it but the paint work was awful, I think someone had been washing it with a bag of gravel every week.

The turbo Cayman seems to be hit harder on values and the 4.0 is a holding its value better having watched the market for 6 months and for me it was the best.

Interesting position to be in and here are my own experiences though concerning 718 Caymans rather than 718 Boxsters and V8 F types namely the SVR and the V8 R rather than the 450 .
I had owned 15 various Jaguars before ending up with the SVR F type and when looking to change found that thanks to Jaguar becoming an SUV manufacturer I simply had nowhere to go . I was in my fifties when I bought my first Porsche a 991 GTS which although far better put together than any Jaguar I found very disappointing . It just lacked the searing acceleration of the SVR running out of steam around 155mph . It came into its own however as soon as you turned into a high speed bend . Due to the mid engine and the driving position it just inspired so much more confidence than the Jaguar did .
I think I sum it up best by saying that with the Jaguar you sat "on it" whereas with the Porsche you sat "in it". You really feel a connection with the Porsche that you won't feel with any Jaguar . I followed the 991 GTS up with a couple of Vantages , a 20 and then a 21 Plate . Both fine machines but no connection to the Topic we are discussing . I then started reading up on the 718 4.0 GTS Cayman and I couldn't find a poor review no matter how hard I looked and so I took the plunge with a new 23 Plate from Porsche Wolverhampton which at 20,000 miles got changed for a 25 plate a couple of months back . I found to my amazement that all the reviews were true , it's a wonderful creation and head and shoulders above the 991 GTS when it comes to performance and enjoyment . A proper Sportscar and in my humble opinion the best Sportscar money can buy under £100,000 . Several Media outlets have reached the same conclusion .
Getting back to the F Types . Apart from the base 2.0 litre which I consider pointless all are perfectly adequate . Generally all are well equipped with everything you need and my main criticisms are confined to the quality of the fittings and the driving position that I consider far too high . The gearbox also isn't in the class of the Porsche PDK . The F type whatever the Model isn't a proper Sportscar . Instead it falls between two stools that of GT and Sportscar and ends up doing neither job well . Most will be perfectly happy with that and good luck to them . To catch an SVR F Type in a straight line you would need another £70,000 and a 911 Turbo S . When it comes to a fast bend however the F Type will be found wanting against a mere 718 4.0 GTS Cayman and you could easily add the Boxster GTS into that statement .
They are also better screwed together and depreciate at a slower pace . Personally I would save my money and wait for a 4.0 litre GTS Boxster at the right money . Plenty will have different views and it would be a strange world if we were all of the same opinion . Porsche all day long for me fella .

Oh I agree. It is a great engine. But the jag is all about the engine and as a comparison I’d want a NA 6 718 which is less all about the engine than the chassis but the engine is such a peach that it really enhances the experience.

Thank you for your response.

I am between a boxster or a cayman 2.5 liter or a 4.0 GTS. Both look amazing and price wise depending on the spec and year of production are very similar.

The mid engine gives a balanced drive and having only test driven the 2.0 boxster I think I need to pay another visit to my local dealer.

Thank you for your comments. They have helped me along my journey to discover my next car.

I am definitely getting closer to a decision but now I need to decide between the boxster or cayman 4.0 GTS.

I am sure either decision would be perfect but I want to make sure I make the right choice.

The Boxster feels like a new toy with the convertible feature but the UK weather would limit the practicality of using it.

How do you find the car to be in the winter months?

I think the problem with the 4.0 is you pay so much more over a highly specked 2.5 or 2.0 you have to really, really value the noise.

Else, everything else Porsche is pretty much identical. It s a tough choice, but a great one to have, Jag also a great option but far more GT cruiser than sports as said. +Porsche although far from perfect don t have the same JLR reliability issues.

Having driven everything on your list I d say 4.0 if money is a minor consideration just to get the full flush as it were. For anything else, if value is a concern (which tbf it rarely is on PH) then why stop at a 4.0 GTS! GT4s , RS s or even a spider with the complex manual roof could be options?

Else, you definitely can’t go wrong with the turbos, and they are certainly holding their resale values damn it.

I am finding that the price jump from a high spec 2.0 to a 2.5 and then a 4.0 is between 5-10k depending on the year.

When it comes to the GT4 I love the look of it but practicality of driving it in the city might not work.

The RS and the Spyder look amazing but then the price really does jump a bit depending on the year/ spec I go for.

With Porsche it really is a deep rabbit hole of choices.

I could even get an older 911 for the price of the GTS 4.0 but then I really like the idea of driving a mid engine car which offers more space in the front and back.

The 911 offers more seats but they are not really useable. I had one many years ago and feel like a change.

I’m finding £70k will get a good 4.0 GTS vs 50k for the 2.5 GTS. Having driven both I just can’t see the extra 20k is worth spending but to each their own. That’s OPC prices, mind.

There’s nothing the 2.5 won’t do that the 4.0 will. So it’s all about soundtrack and how much you value that, imo.

I have been looking at dealer sites and can see some new some slightly older 2025-2023) but the price difference is 5k depending on the spec.

Think I need to visit the dealer again and test the other cars out prior to committing myself. As you say if the difference is negligible then I may go for the 2.5 GTS with the higher spec.

Just buy this, put the roof down and enjoy.

Just dropped this by 2k, for an opc prepped car with two years warranty this is good value and a decent spec.

I have been watching the market for 6 months so know most of the Caymans and Boxsters out there. This looks great but I wanted a Cayman
