I'm looking to buy my first car. Based on the budget, I've decided to look at used automatic cars that are 10-15 years old. From my research and requirements, I've landed on Toyota Auris and Honda Civic. I'm conflicted between these two.

Toyota Auris Hyrbid has higher MPG and lower taxes (£20 pa). However, it's a bit boring to drive? Also, it has CVT gearbox tranmission which I hear might be problematic compared to torque convertor gearboxes?

Honda Civic seems more fun to drive. However, it has lower MPG and higher taxes (£200+ pa). Also, in Civic, I'm only looking at the ones with torque convertor gearbox and not the ones with ishift.

What are your thoughts on the above? Any recommendations?

I ve had an Auris, it was a great car and never skipped a beat in the 4 years I had it, cvt is marmite because of the noise when accelerating. It is not problematic, look how many taxi drivers use Prius/auris.

The big issue with both I believe is the catalytic converters are prone to
Being stolen, I had mine protected so never suffered fortunately.

I have an 11 year old Auris hybrid with 75K miles on it. Owned it now for six years / 40k miles and had no problems with the transmission or the hybrid system in general. The hybrid battery seems OK. Taxi drivers have told me that the hybrid battery tends to go at about 150K miles.

It’s not a driver’s car by any means but very easy to live with.
