Had a mildly unpleasant experience with a dealer recently.

No biggie, but their set up and the fact that they gave me the hard sell on a warranty upgrade/extension did get me thinking.

They have an in-house workshop and MOT station, with all cars going out with a fresh advisory-free ticket, inspected and serviced post-sale.

Sounds to me like a good business model:

- Push customers to get the warranty upgrade (I was being pushed for 3 years)

- They get the commission on the warranty sale

- If anything goes wrong they also get paid to do the work

I didn't like the 'approach' and the fact that some issues (probably minor but potentially not) were dismissed a bit too quickly without verification, so I walked away. It was disappointing as it was a nice car and I'd travelled a few hours to see it.

I don't want to go into too much detail about the issues and the car as they advertise on here.

I was intrigued by the set up though - any thoughts?

This sounds like every main and large dealer I have over dealt with pretty much, I don’t see how this is an unusual setup?

The in house MOT part always worries me to be honest but it may be the norm.

This annoys me the most.

You point out something that might be wrong, for sales person to just dismiss it.

What sales person should be saying is "we'll get workshop to check that"

If ever I'm in that position I write concerns on the order form.

Yep - this wasn't a particularly large dealer which is why I thought it was a bit unusual, but yeah, I would expect it of a main dealer (although not necessarily the MOT side)

Indeed - I'd have hoped he'd have come to the car to look but only interested in getting me sat down with the warranty figures.

I understand why they might be reluctant to put a fresh clean MOT on cars before sale as it ticks down if it's sat there, but surely getting the service done/fixing issues would be wise before putting it front of punters?

Just been to see another - a night and day difference in approach and even though I'm not sure about the car, I'm looking to see what else they have as I'd like to buy from them

I bought an approved Mercedes that came with an MOT from the tyre centre that fitted the new Michelins that were a condition of the sale and an approved Maserati that was MOT’d across the road at Porsche!
