I used Total Car Check last time I needed one.

V check for me, much the same as the one heavily pushed by YouTubers but a lot cheaper

I'd run a free check first using something like 'Vehicle Score' that'll give you the basics like MoT history in an easy to read format (just like the expensive Youtube plugged app) - if that looks good then pay for a Vcheck that checks the write-off/finance status.

I use V Check.

Whatever you use, make sure that the web address matches the name.
Make sure it's not car-checking.com - they will show up as VCheck (and others) in Google search - but they are not. And if you use them for one search, you're signing up to an agreement where they will try to bill you £39 a month for an ongoing service!

Well that's weird. Is it on the DVLA site?

Yes, shows on DVLA. Car is old and has been off the road for many years

I did a check on a car that'd been off the road for 10 years and still got results back, so I'd expect you'd at least get something if it's registered.

Do you have the chassis number? Its possible the plate was taken off the car, then whatever it was applied to has subsequently been scrapped, a long time ago.
