My car lease is due for renewal in the second half of next year. I am currently driving a Golf 8 1.5 TSI, which is my second Golf (the first one was pretty much the same car, minus a few optionals).

Now, I was trying to convince myself to get a Polestar 2, because I've driven it (car hire) and I really enjoyed it. But, living in a flat in London, I was convinced that it wouldn't be the smartest idea.

Instead, I'm now considering going for the GTI, which is roughly £100 more expensive than my current Golf (a month), but arguably much more fun and enjoyable.

Is going for a third Golf in a row too dull? What are the alternatives, considering that the GTI would already be a jump in the monthly cost and I really would like to keep that as the top of my budget?

How many miles a year do you drive? How much is the Gti total?

Totally depends on how much the GTI will be costing you so people can compare other options.

the golf Gti has pretty much always been a solid choice, practicle, quick and fun enough, very few compromises, its one of the things VW does really well

Just sold a MK7 GTI PP and think it will be the hardest car I've ever had to replace

It's the closest I've come to the perfect car for me in 21 vehicles, I've had much more exciting cars, I've had a couple more practical cars, but none strike such a perfect balance imo.

But just cannot get on board with the looks of any of the MK8s yet personally

Roughly doing 10K miles/year or slightly less, so not much. But I do enjoy doing the odd long trip (we just came back from a long trip to the South of Italy) or a weekend couple-of-hours drive to get out of London.

Looking at deals online, I should be able to get the GTI for around £350/month (currently paying 270 for the 1.5 TSI).

As the owner of 2EVs I would advise against the Polestar if you live in a flat.

And, as the owner of a Clubsport S, I would steer you towards a Mk7/7.5 GTi. Pick of the bunch - CS aside obviously wink - is the Clubsport ED 40.

Nothing wrong with a Golf.

In terms of alternatives, I think it's worth considering a turbo six BMW of some kind, as it'd be a more exciting engine and RWD. Not saying it's better, but worth a test drive perhaps.

I'd agree with not getting an EV until you can charge at home.

Not sure how much you'd want to do up front, but this is a not too bad deal at current, for today's leasing deals and prices anyway. If i hadn't already ordered a new F70 M135 on the cheap deals they recently had on, I would be going for this:

Then I must be the dullest man hehe

I've had a string of Golfs since 1988 (just one Corrado broke the run). They are just great all rounders.

Also how many fun miles do you drive? Crawling round London is much the same in any regular car.

Wow, that's not too bad at all. I usually pay a 12-month deposit, just to keep monthly payments as low as possible.
My lease will end in August next year, depending on what the delivery times are then, I might look at ordering March/April.

Right now I keep it under 10k miles/ year, but as I said I do enjoy the odd weekend outdoor trip, to get out of London, or very rarely much longer trips (just came back from a round trip to South Italy with the 1.5 TSI)

Apologies, missed the next year part and thought it was this year! Suppose you'd have to see what deals are going nearer the time, as this won't be applicable for that time frame.

£300 and a little bit pcm for a Golf GTI sounds a cracking deal to me!

I think many motoring journalists have said over the years that the only car you ever need is a Golf. My next car is likely to be a Golf estate. I've had a Mk 1 and several Mk 2 GTIs, but I'm thinking of revisiting when my Audi Q5 has gone.

I'd agree. I'm on my third, over a few years, a 2015 GTi PP. DSG because of a foot operation. It's very comfortable (for me anyway), nippy enough, mpg in the 30's on daily use, proper dials and buttons, enough room with the seats down for all I need including motorcycle frame and engines etc.

If they'd kept the "manual" controls I'd have a newer one.

Exactly the same here! Got one of the very last 7.5s with low miles and near perfect condition. I absolutely love it and it does everything so well. Sure there are faster cars, better handling cars, more practical cars etc but this does everything very well without too much compromise. The only problem I have is that I won't park it in Lidl car park or anywhere that leaves it vulnerable to being damaged by idiots. I'm retiring soon so it's going to be replaced by a banger. It will be a very sad day...
