I have a quandary on a good choice learner car.
Will potentially be my car, a mid size hatch preferred for family duties, 4 in the car and need luggage space - something to share.

Those typical first learner cars isn t feasible for my usage such as Citroen C1 etc.

Modern cars I see don t have manual handbrake, do kids these days learn with them? Or are most E Brakes?

What would you choose which are reliable and decent, open to hear thoughts from used cars ranging from £3-10k to see the range of choices.

Cheaper I look at VW Polo, but Golf size preferred, but something 1.0-1.4 litre petrol probably better for insurance. Open to Japanese, German etc.

Thanks. Are the 1.0 across the VAG similar. I have a family member with it in a an A3, but see them in VW, Seat etc

I’m not really a Ford fan, but see the 1.0 ecoboost in fiesta and focus; both with manual hanbrakes.

Or for those who have had new learners are Electronic handbrakes okay to learn in?

Scrumplet the younger recently passed her driving test. Her instructor’s car had an electronic handbrake with hill hold assist.

I’ve got a Peugeot 308SW over in Portugal, it’s a 2022 car with the 1.2 petrol turbo engine and a manual box.

It’s a nice little car, and plenty of space in it even for me at 6ft5.

I’d have thought that would be fairly insurance friendly with the small engine.

My partner passed their test last year and needed something of similar requirments we ended up in a 1.3 Dacia Duster. They said they wanted something simple and cheap so that's what they got. Not much in the way of driver assistance, blind spot monitoring is handy and four cameras but they are fiddly to use. Manual handbrake with no hill hold was a bit of a shock to them, you have to get something newer than 2021 for that I believe. It's got the space you need while not being much bigger than a Golf. The biggest draw was that the insurance was dirt cheap compared to anything else that size.
