Fiesta st mk8 vs 308 270 gti
Discussion
Morning all! Looking for peoples wisdom and advice. Im looking at buying either an st mk8(performance pack) or a 308 gti 270 as a daily driver come fun car.
What do people think would be the best choice? Ill be doing the odd long motorway journey, but mainly town running and some b-road driving.
Cheers

Can’t comment on the Fiesta but had the 308.
Was a great car, fine on the motorway, good complaint ride but slightly firm but typical Peugeot in that it’s figured out how to ride and handle well without stupidly firm suspension. Engine has been worked over by Peugeot Sport so internals are stronger and sorted.
Handling is sublime. Not the fastest thing but on sweeping backroads it comes alive and is great fun.
Brakes are phenomenal but are very to pricey to change but there are aftermarket options that bring the cost down but mainly boils down to swapping out the brake calliper pistons to a modified part for a few hundred quid.
Gearbox can be a bit notchy (esp from cold) and the throw is a bit long for the type of car and the gear knob itself feels a bit odd in the hand (ooh err, missus) but that could be just me.
Make sure you’re ok with the dials over the steering wheel thing. Not everyone gets on with it but I found it a non-issue even with the teeny steering wheel.
Servicing can a be a bit pricey as every service is treated as a major service with plugs changed everytime.
Was a great car and still miss it.

Considered both of these in past and the 308 always gets positive comments. I could not live with heater controls being on a screen based on previous cars so didn't even look at one.
Ended up with a MK7 Fiesta in the end for no real reason over the MK8.
Test drive the 308 and see if you can live with the dash setup as people also find the steering wheel covers the dials.

I've got a 308 GTI, and had it just over a year. It's a pretty good all rounder. The seats are comfortable, it sips fuel (compared to the 3.0 subaru that went before it) and it can really shift. The boot is a good size, and rear leg room is far better than M135, 3 door Megane, or Alfa Gulietta. The brakes are amazing, and you can really feel the LSD pulling you around.
Downsides are: Electric steering doesn't give much feedback. Gearbox is a bit notch-y when cold. Seating position was a bit odd at first, but I got used it it. I have no idea why it has massage seats with no heater function. The standard ICE is a bit rubbish. I've upgraded mine to Android Auto, which is a huge improvement, but cost £425. Heater function being in the touchscreen isn't an issue, I tend to just set it to Auto and leave it alone. There is very little in terms of aftermarket support, if modifying is something that interests you. There's only one cupholder and it's rubbish.
Watch out for: Brakes. Calipers Seize (can be rebuilt) and discs are £700 from godspeed. Front shocks wear and rattle (I've replaced mine with Bilstein, which are much better). Servicing at home is a pain, the oil filter is buried under a tangle of hoses, the undertray is massive and held up with a thousand fasteners. Even changing the air filter is annoying. The battery location is also just annoying. 235/35 R19 tyres are expensive and good ones really make a difference.

The 308 is the pick from those two if you can live with the over the steering view of the dash (some can't) then I'd say it's the one to buy.
Discs used to be ridiculous money but they are now more sensible cost wise, rather than the Fiesta have you considered the last of line Focus ST?

Had my mk 8 for 4 years,it has been ultra reliable,Only needing a set of tpms sensors beside routine maintenance. The only other essential spec wise, besides the performance pack are led lights.fuel economy has been 36.5 standard 37.5 since I have been running Mountune 260.If are planning on it being a daily driver, I would recommend an st 2,17inch wheels better ride,or the performance edition, comes with coilovers as standard, plus it is specced with every option bar pan roof.one thing is for certain,it will put smile on your face.

I would go with the Fiesta personally.
My old mk7 ST3 was possibly the best car I ever had and I do miss it. As a daily the only real complaint was the bouncy ride. I have driven a mk8.5 which seemed a bit more grown up, not to mention more powerful. The mk8 is probably very similar and with 5dr would make a very good, practical daily.
The 308 is perhaps a more interesting choice but it does come with some drawbacks mentioned above. As far as I can see the only real issue with the ST is that thieves quite like them. Great cars though.

I have a Mk8.5 (previously a Mk7). Get one of the last ST-3s with Winter Pack. The Mk8.5 has more torque than the Mk8, and the later ones all have the LSD, digital dash, Ford Performance seats and matrix headlights as standard. My old mk7 ST3 was possibly the best car I ever had and I do miss it.
