Buying a car with private plate being taken off

Hi everyone
Need some advice so I am buying a car privately . The vehicle currently has a private plate which the seller wants to keep.
he has submitted with DVLA online that he wants his private plate on retention and is getting the old plates put back on tomorrow .
Should I wait for the new v5 to arrive to him before I purchase the car?

Yes, you can’t transfer keepership until you have the new V5
The current V5 becomes void as soon as you apply to take the private plate off.
You could in theory buy the ca and get a receipt and trust that they will then transfer ownership as technically speaking ownership and keepership are not the same thing but I wouldn’t
