Morning everyone,

I need a large car as my 1 series catastrophically failed it's MOT (rear subframe, had no idea!).
We have a 21 plate Tiguan as my wife's car but I would like a large car for family duties and tip runs and other things.

Cars still seem to be very expensive which is a shame but I have about 8-9 grand to spend and I would like something as new and low mileage as possible please, I drive about 20k a year and park in random car parks and roads for a week or so at a time.

I've looked at....
Skoda Superb (top of the list but seems to be expensive)
Insignia estate
Infiniti FX/QX70 (left field but I've wanted one for a while)
5 series/E Class estates are probably too expensive
5 series GT is something I've also wanted for a while but also expensive
V70

I would like something big, comfy and reliable. Have I missed anything?

Other options not on your original list:

Hyundai i40

Kia Optima (presumably related to the Hyundai)

Your likely to get a newer insignia for your money but then your driving an insignia.....

If you are doing 20k miles a year I assume that you are looking at diesels?

I'd also include Honda Accords in that price point - they take high mileages well and have impressive build quality.

The Toyota Avensis used the N47 BMW diesel engine which can have issues, the Avensis also feels quite cheap compared to the Accord.

The Mazda 6 is a good shout, they seem to be reliable and great to drive.

With all diesels in this price bracket though you have the risk of the DPF filter - this is usually a £2500 job and often fails at about 15 years / 150,000 miles. If you an find a car with a recently replaced DPF it could be a good buy.

I didn't know the Avensis used the N47. One maybe to avoid, I had that in my 1 series and the chain was a royal PITA to replace.

For the Superb, is the hatch suitably capacious or is the estate the one to go for?

Well I have a Superb (MkIII) hatch, which is plenty big enough for me. Depends what you want to put in the boot regularly. I often have a dog cage and 4 people's bags for travelling on holiday/weekends away, and it's plenty big enough.

The passenger cabin is the same on both, if that's what you meant, plenty of room for my 6'3" son to travel in the back in absolute comfort.

Another vote for the Mazda 6 estate here, I'd be trying to get into something like this: https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202509166...

Note I've gone for the petrol rather than the diesel. The Mazda diesels don't have the greatest rep (especially pre-2018) so you could be in a world of pain.

The 2.0 litre petrol does a reported 47.9mpg on the combined cycle, let's say 40mpg in real use. That would be bearable for me, costlier at the pump than the oil burner, but you'd have none of the worries of a used modern diesel.

The Mazda 6 had a refresh for 2017, so the later 66 plate Sport Navs onwards had updated interiors including heated steering wheel and colour HUD (older models and early 66 plates had green HUD and no heated wheel). The diesel engine issues were also sorted at that time.

The issue in question with pre-2017 MY was around DPF regen - if you stopped the engine mid-regen, excess fuel used to increase the burn temp would remain in the engine then mix with and dilute the oil, eventually leading to a world of pain. Imagine someone doing 20k per year wouldn't have to worry about it too much.

The 2.2d also came in 150hp and 180hp variants - I specifically sought out a 2017 180 and had it remapped to 230 with no issues.

From 2015 or 2016 I believe although I'd expect that the engine positioning in a FWD layout should make the chain (if ever needed) a much easier job than sticking it against the bulkhead in the BMW.
