I m trying to save up for a Golf Gti 7.5pp. Currently have a mk5 gti that has a some expensive jobs coming up so thinking of getting something cheap to run for 1-2 years to speed up the saving. Any suggestions for something that will do good mpg, low tax/insurance and decent chance of being reliable?

- Approx 10k miles a year
- Golf sized (could maybe go down to something like a Yaris but definitely needs to be 5 door, also open to small estate cars).

Budget is low as possible! Think 1-2k.

Repair what you have, then at least you will know you have a sorted car.

The reality of a car at between £1k and £2k is it will almost certainly be on its last legs. Yes you may get a perfectly serviced car for that price as many here will tell you, but in my experience you will end up spending on getting it sorted and no doubt many repairs going forward.

Better the devil you know. And how expensive can the repairs needed for a 20 year old golf be? Or more to the case is why do they need doing?

I would agree, most stuff at that price point will be garbage.

Spend the money on the car you have.

Cheers all, thinking about the advice above it does make sense, after all I’d probably only be saving £300 a year in tax and a few hundred more in fuel. Some of the repairs on the car are wants not needs (e.g suspension refresh) so I could always put some work off.
