Late 2017 model, auto with 40k miles and FSH.

Had they addressed the timing chain issues by then?

Anything else to be aware of?

I’ll be throwing at least 25k miles per year on so hoping it could be a good tool for the job but also open to other options.

Cheers

It all depends on the service history of it. The chains weren’t an issue by then. I have the 2011 version in an E91. Now on 130k miles with no issues at all. It gets fresh oil and filters every 4-5 months though and with the tensioner changed too (you get a slight noise for a second or two on start up when the tensioner is on its way out).

Many of the “timing chain” issues could have easily be fixed by simply replacing the timing chain tensioner, if done before failure. Mine started rattling on startup and this worked for me, the independent garage said they had done a fair few with success.

This is the part.

BMW specialist charged me 30 mins labour to swap (be a 10 minute job for them). You can do it easy enough but it was due a service at the same time so had it done for peace of mind.

Worth viewing the car you’re interested in when it’s cold so you can listen for the noise on start up. But it’s a cheap fix if there is a little noise anyway. Clean oil, at regular intervals, is the main thing. Not stupid 20k mile intervals.

Yes. The timing chain issues affected the N47 engine that was used in BMW 320d models from 2007 - 2015. The B47 engine that replaced it in late 2015 is much more reliable. It should be able to do 250,000 miles with regular servicing.

Check it's had the EGR/Cooler recall done, if not it may cause a fire. My fathers 2016 F30 320d did just this before the recall, literally burned a hole in the manifold! Managed to get it done by BMW in the end, had to get towed in.

There is also a recent recall for msport cars that have the msport steering wheel, regarding airbags, worth checking also.

Timing chains haven't really been an issue, long oil service intervals were the main issue that exacerbated the chain when used as fleet cars, stick to 8k max changes, keeps the turbo good too.

Don't neglect the rear diff and gearbox oil too, they ain't sealed for life.

Maybe look at the 520d given the 25k pa miles - much, much nicer to munch the miles.

An 8 year old car having only done 5k a year doesn't sound ideal for a modern diesel. Does of course depend how those miles have been done.

The risk of low mileage is of course dpf.

In terms of a 3/5-20d for mileage, I find my 2017 320d perfect for eating up miles and m sport seats extremely
Comfortable.

If with passengers I think the 5 series is quite a bit more spacious inside

Get a garage to read both keys before hand. If they can't be read then it has a blocker on it
